HIT ALL-HUMAN AUSSIE CIRCUS SPECTACULAR IS COMING TO DURBAN FOR THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
The Australian Circus Spectacular has been making waves around the country for all of the right reasons. Offering a night of escapism and positivity, the show has gained thousands of super fans across South Africa, with one family even travelling 400 kilometers in one evening from the Karoo to Port Elizabeth just to see the spectacle.
Soon it will be Durban’s turn to experience AUSSIE. The international cirque production will be showing at Crawford College, North Coast for the school holiday period from Friday the 18th of March until Sunday the 3rd of April 2016.
The show blends stunning cirque artistry and acrobatics on the ground and in the air with hilarious slapstick comedy, mysterious illusion and extreme stunts including FMX jumps, the splitting Globe of Death (a spherical cage in which four riders encircle each other and perform precarious tricks) and one of the world’s only surviving Human Cannonball acts.
AUSSIE marked its international debut at the GrandWest Grand Arena in Cape Town, performing to thousands over a limited weekend run of shows. Among dignitaries, media, Capetonians, tourists, and celebrities, one of the most excited audience members was the Group Technical Events and Entertainment Manager from Sun International, Gavin Taylor: “AUSSIE Circus is a modern circus that mixes up good doses of humour with death-defying acts. We were witness to all the drama and intensity of the technical skills required between man and machine, combined with amazing feats of human endurance, skill and strength. Audiences moved from having their hearts in their throats and fingers clutching the edge of their seats to moments of great big belly laughter.”
The production then moved onto its first Big Top Tent set-up in George – the hometown for returning Executive Producer, Sebastian Cassie, and Ringmistress, Meryl Cassie. The crew were given a traditional welcome at a heritage homestead in Pacaltsdorp, with representatives of the local communities present. The opening shows in George were packed, with an ecstatic crowd who demonstrated the regional city’s hunger for international events. Of the show’s short stopover, George Municipality’s Mayoral office CLL Marlene Viljoen, said:
“We had an amazing evening, it was incredible to see how talented your performers were. The evening far exceeded our expectations; this was no ordinary circus! Well done Aussie Stars”. Tanya Watson – Online Editor for the George Herald said; “It was magical, and amazing, and absolutely awesome! So much better than I expected and nothing like I’ve ever experienced before. A must-see for people of all ages!”
AUSSIE is currently set up on the Festival Lawns of the Boardwalk Hotel in sunny Port Elizabeth. The show has hosted packed out shows to exuberant crowds with a festival-like atmosphere aiding to keep the party going during intermission.
Heilie Combrinck, Editor of UD News had great things to say about the show –
“Awesome entertainment that keeps you on the tip of your chair. Stunning costumes, brilliant performances and what a good laugh with the never-know-where the clown will pop out next. The best of all is the fact that it is an exclusively human performed circus, no animals! Much better to watch to what extent the human body can perform. Truly spectacular cirque flair!”
