The Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society is something out of every boys dreams. If you ever thought that the model train set you got at Christmas would be better if you could actually ride on it, this is the place for you.
Located in the quiet middle class suburb of Bisley in Pietermarizburg lies the well hidden Halley Park gardens. Climb onto the train under the Victorian Station building from where you can depart on an extensive miniature railway that winds its way around the gardens over bridges and through the tunnel. Both adults and children can enjoy a ride on anyone of our locomotives which are powered either by steam or by diesel. Every item of rolling stock from the passenger cars to the well detailed locomotives are all hand built by the members of the PMES, some locomotive build projects taking over 20 years of afterhours tinkering in the workshop.
In addition to running trains for the public, the PMES primary objective is to foster an interest in engineering by building miniature replicas of locomotives, stationary engines, internal combustion engines, hot air engines, machine tools, and any other engineering related projects to the original working specifications. There is a great emphasis on steam preservation. Every year we host our very popular Wings, Wheels and Whistles hobbies exhibition where other clubs that promote mostly hand crafted items have the opportunity to display what they do in an attempt to grow some interest in their various fields and perhaps gain a member or two. This takes place over the first weekend of August every year.
The PMES is a unique venue that offers families a safe and affordable way to have fun together while appreciating the beauty of nature and enjoying the ingenuity of man at the same time. This venue is open to the public on the first Sunday of every month from 10am until 4pm and for those who often forget their lunch at home you’ll be pleased to know that a variety of cool drinks and eats are always on sale.
They offer great activities for the whole family and they encourage the use of their facilities for birthday parties, school parties, etc.
