REVIEW: Tala Private Game Reserve
Tala Private Game Reserve: How do you describe this magical place in words?
You can’t – but we’re going to try!
When we heard that we were going to be staying at Tala Collection Private Game Reserve we immediately started packing in excitement.
I had heard people often talk about Tala and how this place, with only a 45-minute drive from Durban is a must-see and do!
Now under new management, the Tala Collection offers a stay where treasured memories are made.
We left Umhlanga around 4pm and headed towards Tala, situated in Camperdown, Pietermaritzburg. As we entered the gates, we were greeted with every outdoor lover’s dream: open grassland for days!
Tala Collection Private Game Reserve is a wildlife conservancy, providing exceptional game watching and birding, setting the stage for that perfect photograph.
We arrived at reception where we were handed our keys for the weekend as well as a map detailing where our accommodation would be. (It’s easy to get lost in this magical place!)
Before we headed to our accommodation, we had a lovely dinner at the La Tala restaurant complimented with a drink each.
After dinner, we got back into our car and drove to our stay for the weekend: The Leadwood Lodge.
We were incredibly blown away from the minute we walked in. Built by a team of artisans with locally sourced shale, Leadwood Lodge combines exceptional architecture, towering thatch and resplendent finishes against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty.
The décor is an eclectic merging of antique and organic Africa with one-of-a-kind artistic elements.
The lodge was designed on an ethic of ‘nothing straight,’ and the final results are a masterpiece of earth, water, glass, and hardwoods.
What an incredibly beautiful place! There was also minimal signal, making your escape away in the bush pure bliss as you’re switched off from social media.
There’s also an outdoor shower! – HIGHLY recommended!
We decided to take a game drive to experience the wildlife, and ended up taking many beautiful shots, like this one in particular where we came across a field of about 20 or so giraffes!
For dinner, we opted for their customized picnic baskets to be delivered to our room. We picked 11 items on a supplied list and set a delivery time of 5pm, just in time for the sunset.
Tala Collection Private Game Reserve spans over 3,000 hectares and incorporates many diverse natural environments, the reserve features over 380 bird species, with big game that includes kudu, hippo, giraffe, and eland.
