REVIEW: Zinkwazi Ocean Reef Hotel
A hop, a skip and an hour & 15 minute journey, we found ourselves in Bali. No, we do not have the fastest private jet in the world. But yet here we were, at Zinkwazi’s Ocean Reef Hotel.
No layover, no baggage claim, no airport coffee, and no grumpy passport officials. But even so, with cocktails strong enough to forget any such travel ordeal. And hospitality to reassure you that it was all worth it at Ocean Reef Hotel.
The Ocean Reef Hotel is an up-market 4 star hotel, situated in the Holiday Village of Zinkwazi. A Gateway to Kwa-Zulu Natal’s game reserves, yet close to Umhlanga and King Shaka Airport. Immersed by a milkwood forest, one can choose 1 of 3 spacious, luxury accommodation options. A beautiful bedroom and bathroom en-suit, or 2 or 3 bedroom Afro-Balinese private villas overlooking the indigenous forest and Indian Ocean. Enjoying views from either your bedroom or private veranda, or both! This scenery provides a calm tranquil atmosphere, perfect for an escape. A vast expanse of beach can be found at the end of a boardwalk through the dense Balinese, I mean, South African jungle.
With a view of the night sky illuminated by dotted stars, we enjoyed our al fresco dining experience on this mentioned private veranda. Serenaded by the lulling crash of the ocean, fluttering bat squeaks and singing insects, (perhaps trying to avoid the fate of the bats) created quite the romantic moment.
Did we seriously just travel an hour from Durban?
Because no girls’ weekend away is complete without chocolate and alcohol, and because the chocolate was already finished, we emerged from our villa to see what the bar had to offer. Gasping at the drinks menu. “Fishbowls! Oh my gosh! When last did you have a fish bowl! Wow! That takes me back…” Back about 10 years. It may be safe to say we don’t get out much, considering Bianca’s elated enthusiasm towards said Fishbowl cocktail. And confirmed by the fact that the 3 of us could not even finish it. Not much had changed in these 10 years it seems…
We took our cocktail back to the villa with great expectations of getting through it.
The bar and restaurant is situated at the hotel, overlooking the picturesque infinity pool, and milkwood woodland. The restaurant boasts an a la carte menu, which can be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Whether it be a vacation, a conference, or a wedding, this tropical Indonesian inspired destination will transport you as quickly as Bianca’s private jet.
