Brew and bemusement on tap at the TOPS at SPAR Bierfest 2015

Published

on

Rain or shine, it’s Bierfest time! Lads don your Lederhosen, lasses get your dirndl ready, the TOPS at SPAR Bierfest is back with great entertainment and new beers to boot!

Now in its 5th fabulous year, SA’s ultimate ‘brewhaha’ and festival of all things frosty, frothy and fun will get the Bavarian-inspired party started in Durban at Suncoast from 4th – 5th September, move onto Johannesburg for two weekends at Montecasino, 9th – 11th October & 16th -17th October, and finally transform the Village Green at the Newlands Brewery in Cape Town into a brilliant old-style beer hall from the 6th – 8th November.

At each event, the world-class TOPS at SPAR Bierfest, in association with Tsogo Sun, Jagermeister, Gearhouse, Dryver, Good Fellas and Jiguja, will be hosted inside a 4 000-seater Bavarian Brauhaus festooned with festival décor direct from München. Modeled on the much-loved Munich Oktoberfest, the ever-popular TOPS at SPAR Bierfest will once again recreate the reveler, tradition and, of course, the wunderbar tastes of this epic annual celebration (but on home soil!)

For this year’s uproarious event, presenting partner and new specialty beer brand No. 3 Fransen Street will be bringing their three small-batch brands to the event in the form of a delicious Cream Ale, a pert Irish Red Ale and a traditional Krystal Weiss. The event’s Master Brewers will of course again be bringing fans the long-time favourite, limited edition Bavarian-styled Royal Bavaria Oktoberfest Bier. Bier lovers can again look forward to a true journey of discovery.

Master Brewers will be on hand to enlighten beer-curious attendees with insider info and anecdotes at Bierfest’s “Braumeister Ecke” (a.k.a Brewmasters Corner). Live oompah music (performed by a seven-piece authentically German oompah band), costumed ale-carrying Frauleins and lip-smackingly beautiful Bavarian food (eisbein, German sausages, pickles, pretzels und sauerkraut) make Bierfest the unmissable festive appreciation of all things bier!

Hosted by The ‘Mayor of Munich’, Brendan Murray – the comedian, voice artist and actor best known as a frequent stand-up comic on the Cape Town comedy circuit – this year’s hotly anticipated Bierfest activities range from the traditional (‘Tapping of the Keg’, ‘Best-Dressed,’ and ‘Mass-Heben’) to the madcap; cow milking competitions, treasure hunts, and the full cast of the Brothers Grimm fairytales at your service. For those that love some rock with their party roll, SA’s best-loved party band, Me and Mr Brown will delight and have you screaming for more.

Value for money and an all-round entertainment spectacle, the TOPS at SPAR Bierfest has fast established itself as a not-to-be-missed annual event. Getting together a garrulous gathering of friends or colleagues couldn’t be easier as Bierfest offers a broad variety of specially ‘crafted’ ticket packages (everything from pre-booked tables, meals and costume hire) ensure all the preparation is arranged before you arrive at your table, should you wish.

#DrinkSmart, TOPS at SPAR Bierfest’s responsible drinking programme spearheaded by TOPS at SPAR’s mobile phone app DRYVER, in association with Good Fella’s, Uber, Beck’s Non-Alcoholic and JIGUJA detox drink, proudly provides Bierfest patrons with a broad range of safe and affordable choices to drink responsibly and get home safely; rehydration stations, Good Fellas memberships and Designated Driver Rewards Programmes are all on tap.

As in previous years, all purchases of food, drinks and merchandise at the festival are made with “Crowns” (which can be purchased along with the tickets themselves). These are available in denominations of R30 and sold in packs of five. Crowns are non-refundable.

All packages can be booked through the official TOPS at SPAR Bierfest (www.bierfest.co.za) website or through the event’s Facebook page, SA Bierfest.

The event is not open to visitors under the age of 18.

“I ordered a beer and then I ordered another beer, because why finish one when I can finish two? Having only one is great for love, but bad for beer.”

Canadian duo Neon Dreams are no strangers to the South African music scene. Their 2019 single “Life Without Fantasies” reached the top of the South African viral charts amassing millions of streams in 2021 during the lockdown. The band connected with tens of thousands of fans online which led to their first sold out headline tour. They have continued to cement themselves in the industry here, having toured the country a number of times over the past few years and return in February 2024 to share the stage with Milky Chance in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

Sean Koch is one of SA’s most-loved indie-folk artists who brings a mixed bag of African and western, influence alongside messages of home, a connection to nature, the ocean and the people around him; to his storytelling, feel-good music. While rooted in his flowing-folk style, his music is diverse. From dance infused songs like ‘Lift You Up’ the standout single from his collection (including the Double MZK & G DOM remix) to the dreamier songs like ‘Feel the Energy’ that carry deeper messages of connection to the natural world and the people that surround us.
