Durban Fashion Fair

Last week I attended the launch of the Durban Fashion Fair, at Suncoast Towers Hotel.

Before the event, I was lucky enough to get my hair done at Carlton Hair Salon in La Lucia Mall, by the lovely Alex (check out the before and after photos in the gallery).  After playing around with ideas (we had considered a piecey fishtail braid, but it wasn’t working with my hair length), we decided on messy waves, and I have to say she did an outstanding job, and my hair looked and felt gorgeous for the event!

We arrived at the event and were greeted with a choice of different welcoming drinks – champagne, a red cocktail or a taster of Black Grouse Whiskey, which were so beautifully presented and delicious.  The outside area by the pool of the Suncoast Towers Hotel was the venue for the evening, and it had been done up so beautifully, with small cocktail tables and gorgeous floral arrangements, as well as a buffet of the most delicious Indian themed food, boasting a huge table of dressings, sauces and toppings for your curries and mini bunny’s.

It was very pleasant while everybody mingled, nibbled and sipped on delicious finger foods and drinks, and chatted away, posing for photos for the various other media representatives that were present.

The evening began with the MC giving us a basic breakdown on the Durban Fashion Fair and how it was bringing to life the designs of different Durban designers (with the help of the Municipality as the sponsor).  She introduced speeches by the Deputy Mayor and a few past student designers who had been part of the DFF in previous years, and shared with us how it had helped them to bring their designs from nothing and turn them into real businesses.  There are 32 aspiring designers in the DFF this year who will be travelling to Milan to showcase their work.

Following the speeches was a short fashion show, showcasing a few of our fantastic and already established designers including Dax Martin, Kathrin Kidger, Zarth, House of Luke, Duke and Sibu.  The designs were outstanding, and I have to say that my favourite were the flowing and beautifully coloured dresses modeled for Kathrin Kidger – so so gorgeous and feminine!

The staff of the Suncoast Towers Hotel really deserve a pat on the back for the impeccable service and attention to detail, as they really outdid themselves ensuring that guests were comfortable, always had a drink on hand, and they were just so warm and friendly to everyone present, not just the VIPs.

The launch has really made me excited for the Durban Fashion Fair event itself, happening towards the end of August.
