Q & A

Q1. We know you have toured South Africa with the Lumineers not so long ago. What did you love most about our country?

I’ve now been down there a few times since then, and have managed to explore quite a bit! I’ve had an amazing time traveling in between Durban and Port Elizabeth, staying along the coast, as well as exploring Cape Town and Durban’s music scenes, and getting to know musicians from around both.

Q2. What are you most looking forward to doing / seeing when you come over in December?

I’m looking forward to getting the opportunity to hang out in the Drakensberg. I didn’t get a chance to explore/ hike around too much when I was there, but thought the area was stunning.

Q3. We hear you are a multi-instrumentalist. Which is your favourite instrument to play and why?

I am considering dragging my accordion down there for this one, because I enjoy playing it most.  It’s surprisingly versatile yet specific and weird, a bit of a head turner, and I feel comfortable enough on it to goof around a bit.

Q4. On your days off, what can one expect you to be doing?

I like getting out on hikes, or jumping in the water. Surely that’s an option anywhere in South Africa, any suggestions on hikes or swimming holes, let me know!

Q5. What has been your favourite live-music performance to date?

I think about which shows I’ve played have been my favorite, quite often. But only because it happened last month….

The Lumineers just played at the White House (Obama threw a party) and we’ll probably never get a chance to play there again (at least for that cool of a president). The performance was quick, and we were all a little nervous, but in the end it was very fun.

Otherwise, I think often of the time playing at Youngblood in Cape Town with a whole slough of SA musicians including Albert Frost, Bonj Mpanza (The City) and Lee Lips (Hog Hoggity Hog) among others… It was fun learning and teaching all these songs to make such a magical night happen.

Q6. What is the inspiration behind your music?

I am inspired quite a bit by the sciences, natural wonders, and stories I hear- only about half of my music is Autobiographical, and I’d like to lean further away from it, and stick to all the amazing stories I hear while traveling, and meeting new people.

Q7. What CD are you currently listening to?

I’ve really been obsessed with this Kevin Morby record, “The singing saw”   Definitely Check it out, his sparsity and deep cool bass lines, with a sudden track with a wall of sound, or catchy hook, really pull the whole record together.

Q8. We would all like to be successful in life, what is “success” to you?

Aha! Success to me is finding the balance of being able to do the things that relax and please you, while still challenging yourself with new projects and ideas- Whether that is working a job doing what you love, or being able to fund your hobbies with an equal amount of Work to play, it’s all about that balance!
