Festive Fun on The Holiday Express

The thing about trains… it doesn’t matter where they’re going. What matters is deciding to accept the challenge of trying something new, and just get on…

The Holiday Express, operating the modern KZN Business Express, has arranged several superb family orientated one-day train outings to the Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market, Sugar Rush Park, Salt Rock Hotel and the super special New Year’s Eve trip to Pietermaritzburg.

The Holiday Express departs conveniently from the security of the Premier Lounge, Durban Station (Jeff Taylor Street) with its own private access escalators and platform. Convenient, boom-protected parking is available immediately outside the Lounge. Travelling time is approximately one hour to Shongweni, 90 minutes to Umhlali and two hours to Pietermaritzburg. A selection of refreshments is always available on board.

31 December: Don’t do the same old, boring, predictable party for New Year’s Eve this year, rather think out of the box…and hop onto the train! Enjoy a memorable New Year’s Eve themed train ride experience to Pietermaritzburg. Registration is at Durban Station’s Premier Lounge at 2pm with a welcome drink on arrival and entertainment by the talented Milton. Your cabin crew, dressed to impress, will be awaiting your entrance at each carriage. Various characters to suit the “train” theme will be on board to keep you entertained. Departure is at 3pm and you can expect music and PA announcements throughout the trip and lots of fun, fun, fun! After two hours of travel, you’ll arrive at Pietermaritzburg Station and disembark to a red carpet, outdoor cinema and food vendors galore to gastronomically delight you, while a 22-piece band entertains and enthrals. After four hours of fun, eating and drinking, the train will return to Durban, arriving at 11pm to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. This trip is suitable, and recommended for the whole family.

23 December: The Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market is home to very nearly 200 stalls, more than half of which offer delectable food and outstanding fresh produce. It is their goal and passion to help people realise the importance of buying fresh and buying local. The Market is 100%-wheel chair accessible, and their child-friendly, soft play area for kids under 4 is free of charge, allowing moms and dads to shop with peace of mind.

27, 28, 29 December, and 6 and 7 January: Sugar Rush Park is a family-focused destination which caters for everyone, from tiny tots to gran and gramps. Their goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle for the whole family, by encouraging fun outdoor activities such as riding and running, or just plain jungle gym climbing. The magic of Sugar Rush is their wide-open spaces, secure parking, refreshment facilities and a host of activities to keep all members of the family actively involved.

Salt Rock Hotel is well known for its protected beaches, recreational characteristics and the Ipi Thombi Spa for a heavenly Zulu massage; a child friendly and safe environment for kids with a jungle gym; wholesome, delicious meals at Coco’s buffet and carvery with Mediterranean cuisine at Al Fresco’s Ristorante; an elevated sun terrace for daily dolphin viewing and seasonal whale watching; a rock tidal pool and a beach bar with private or group braai facilities.
