REVIEW: Riverholm Country Estate
Riverholm Country Estate is situated on the beautiful Spring Grove Dam in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and boasts some of the most spectacular views and wildlife in the area. The dam is well known for excellent fishing, boasting 6 different species including trout and bass.
Four people from Durbanite went to find out what the fuss was all about at Riverholm Country Estate.
“After a short drive from Durban, we immediately felt as if we were transported into another world… The city life fading away while the countryside greeted us.
We were met by Amy, who handed us the keys to our cottage for the next two nights. Driving up to our cottage, we knew that we were right at home. With a self-catering unit right by the dam – it was perfect!
With 4 of us staying over, there were two bedrooms, each with their own private bathrooms. The accommodation also had a cosy lounge, kitchen and balcony.
We decided to braai the first night. While the boys braaied away, us girls got to relax outside with a glass of G&T in our hands, and a view of the beautiful dam.
Riverholm Country Estate is still a working farm, but is now largely a lifestyle retreat, offering a taste of country life and all the magic of the Midlands.
There are scenic walking trails available and one can also go cycling, fishing, bird-watching and canoeing.
The next day we awoke to the sounds of nature, far better than waking up to sounds of traffic back in Durban. We cooked breakfast and headed out to explore the Midlands.
With the Midlands being about a 10 minute drive, Riverholm Country Estate is perfectly situated.
We decided to have lunch at Blueberry Cafe before stopping at the local SPAR to buy some more meat for another braai.
The evening back at Riverholm was spent with a spot of fishing off a canoe, followed by board games, South African cricket on the TV and a leisurely braai.”
There are currently 3 different and unique places to stay at Riverholm. For large groups of people, the Country House sleeps 12 people. This accommodation has surrounding views of the dam as well as a swimming pool.
The beautiful Connaught Lodge sleeps 8 people and is perfect for entertaining friends and family or just for a restful weekend away in the country.
Monmouth Lodge (the one we stayed at) sleeps 4 people. Cosy and warm, it will ensure you have a home away from home with spectacular views and the utmost privacy.
DID YOU KNOW?
The original farm was one of the most respected stud farms in the country, with strong bloodlines competing in racing arenas to this day. Complete with American style barns and home to the country’s most esteemed thoroughbreds, the original farm was later sold and re-named Riverholm Stud.
The farm gained international recognition when the Disney family movie “Racing Stripes” was filmed on location.
