Review: Bonamanzi Game Reserve, Hluhluwe
Bonamanzi is a privately owned Game Reserve, 4000 hectares in size with the Hluhluwe River forming the Eastern border. Proclaimed a Natural Heritage Site in 1995 in recognition of the biodiversity of the Reserve we offer Sand Forests, Savanna & Wetland Areas. This diversity is why Bonamanzi is recognised as one of the best birding destinations in Southern Africa.
From the Eastern side of the Reserve they offer magnificent views over False Bay, and on the Western side a viewing deck overlooking the Lalapanzi Dam where one can relax and watch the sun set.
Bonamanzi is home to “The Big Four“, no Lion. They offer Game Drives on the Reserve which can be booked and paid for at reception.
There are a few roads open to guests to do self drives but these are limited to certain areas and do not cover the whole reserve, the route covers a portion of the Sand Forest and takes you down to a section of the Hluhluwe River.
One of Bonamanzi’s special features is that it provides an interactive bush experience in which you can participate in one of their guided walks or a game drive. They also offer unguided walks on their well appointed trails.
Within a short 30 minute drive they have the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi “Big Five” Reserve. They also offer game drives to the park.
We recently sent 2 contributors to experience a stay at Bonamanzi. Here’s what they had to say:
“Upon arrival at Bonamanzi, we were given a warm and cheerful welcome by four lovely ladies, Pindi, Tracey, Slindile, and Debbie, and promptly shown to our chalet.
We found it to be clean and comfortable and consisted of a huge king size bed decorated with beautiful leaves and dried flowers! Also included in our room was a tea and coffee station with bottled drinking water, combination safe, and T.V.
Our first night’s dinner consisted of the most delicious potjies we’d ever tasted, finished off with decadent puddings, all served outdoors with a central feature of a massive bonfire.
What a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere! Smiling staff were on hand to see to our every need.
In the morning, a buffet breakfast was served in the dining room which was beautifully decorated in a truly African theme.
One of the (many) highlights of our stay was the game drive. Our very knowledgeable ranger, Fred kept us entertained with fascinating facts about the flora and fauna. Another exciting experience was watching 8 huge, hungry crocodiles being fed!
As well as the chalets, Bonamanzi has rustic, secluded tree houses, and caravan and camping sites. A swimming pool is situated close to the camping area.
They also boast a good sized conference hall and a beautiful wedding hall where couples can celebrate their special day.
To simply say we enjoyed our stay at Bonamanzi would not do justice to the friendly and efficient staff. We had the most wonderful and restful two days and would most DEFINITELY recommend Bonamanzi to anyone thinking of booking.”
