On Sunday the 5th of October, the sounds of fun and laughter filled the air on Mount Edgecombe CC Estate 2 (MECC) as their second annual fishing competition took place. The action kicked off at 7:00am with 187 anglers taking up their spots around the picturesque Pani Dam to enjoy a fun morning of fishing. Throughout the day over 300 people enjoyed the spectacle with residents from the Estate setting up picnic sites and chairs to enjoy the sun bursting out from behind the clouds before the anglers reeled in their lines at 12:30pm.
This year’s event was marked by the involvement of big local and national sponsors, which included the likes of Sibaya Casino, Kingfisher, Natal Powerboats, Go Fish Magazine, Hooters SA, Pam Golding Mount Edgecombe and The Golfers Club. The main prize, sponsored by Lynski Fishing Charters, was a deep sea fishing trip for 4 people valued at R5 500 which was claimed by John Cherry for “Heaviest Bag” as a result of his 3.2kg Barbel catch! Runners-up also walked away with fantastic prizes, which included Kingfisher rods and reels, restaurant vouchers courtesy of Hooters SA, an overnight stay at Sibaya Lodge, golfing equipment from The Golfer’s Club and other fishing paraphernalia.
Ron Duckworth, Chairman of Mount Edgecombe Country Club’s Angling Section, was proud of how well-supported this year’s event was. “We saw interest double after last year’s event which had 90 anglers participate, to more than double those numbers for this year’s competition! By hosting this annual event we aim to promote the sport of fishing and create an opportunity for the residents of MECC and their friends to enjoy a family day at Pani Dam. This is an ideal opportunity for parents and grandparents to spend time with their loved ones in a fun environment on the banks of the dam whilst providing their children with an opportunity to participate in a major fishing competition. The support we received from our sponsors and participants was overwhelming and the tournament has now become something of an institution at MECC with fabulous prizes up for grabs,” said Duckworth.
A clear indication that the love for fishing is successfully being instilled in the youth at MECC was the amount of young children winning prizes this year. Duckworth concluded the day with a big vote of thanks to his Angling Committee Members for putting together such a successful and well run event.
