Rugby and hockey fans were treated to Durban’s sport at its best on the weekend during the first annual Sports Experience when the Varsity College Rugby Club played against SA Home Loans Durban Collegians alongside the Fidelity Derby Day and the Varsity College Hockey Club took on Gongs at Riverside Sports Club. The event was very well attended.
The rugby results were as follows; Varsity College RFC 1st team lost to Collegians 38 -11, Varsity College RFC 2nd team lost to Collegians 29 -0, Varsity College RFC 3rd team lost to Collegians 51 -0 while the Under 20A team lost to Crusaders 20-23.
The Varsity College Hockey Club performed very well. The results were as follows; Men’s 1st team beat Gongs 15 – 0, Ladies 1st team beat Gongs 9 – 0 and Ladies 2nd team beat Gongs 1 – 0.
Says Carole Adam, National Sports and Social Manager at Varsity College, “Thank you to all who attended – it was a great day of intense club rugby and super league hockey action. There were plenty of tries and goals to keep the spectators entertained. We certainly hope that the bug has bitten and that our teams will see even greater support in the future.”
Varsity College Durban North has already hosted numerous successful sporting events in 2015 thus far including the Intercampus Sports Day. The campus is confident that the support being received from students, staff members and the public will continue to grow at these events. Supporters can look out for more events in June/July 2015 including; the USSA Hockey, Rugby, Golf and Surfing tournaments as well as the Women’s Interprovincial Hockey Tournament in August 2015.
