CELL C HANDOVER 67 BLANKETS FOR MANDELA TO SIYAJABULA ORPHANAGE

The orphans at Siyajabula Orphanage will be warm and cosy this winter – thanks to Cell C’s humanitarian initiative of keeping disadvantaged people warm as the chill bites.

This week Cell C’s Durban regional office handed over donated blankets to the Siyajabula Orphanage in Molweni, Hillcrest, KWA-Zulu Natal.

The handover formed part of the company’s drive to make Every Day a Mandela Day Blanket Challenge, and was a highlight of the year for office staff who turned out in their numbers to give to the needy. The team report that they found it a “touching” experience.

The Molweni Community (Siyajabula Orphanage Centre in Molweni, Hillcrest) is inhabited by young people and they were thrilled by the gesture and were grateful that they had not been forgotten and were part of the bigger community.

One of the organisers, Buhle Yaka, said they were given a warm welcome by the orphanage.  “They could not hide their anxiety and excitement as we told them about the blankets we were delivering to them. The blankets came in different shapes and sizes and each person was able to find one that fitted their bed.”

She added that resources such as blankets may appear trivial to many, but for those who are without many privileges in life, this small gesture could mean the whole world to them. Cell C subscribes to the values and ethos of Ubuntu, celebrated by the late Nelson Mandela, and identified the make Every Day a Mandela Day Blanket Challenge.

Cell C’s Blanket Challenge is one of many other social initiatives that the cell phone provider believes make Business Citizenry count.  As South Africans, It is our responsibility to meet the government half way and participate relentlessly in creating change and a better country for all.

Staff members who visited the orphanage and donated the blankets were Buhle Yaka, Olga Ndlela, Karmantha Thaver, Alicia Lutchman, Samukelisiwe Dlamini, Rajesh Heeralal, Fazila De Kok, Jerome Naidoo, Thasveer Davnath, Donovan Nayager, Bonisiwe Gina, Sheldeen Saib, Kelvin Choudree, and Susanna Abrahams.
