“Aweh Mzansi” – “Aweh”…this was the official greeting for the evening. A salute of sorts – a salute to some of the funniest guys in S.A, a salute to the city of Durban and a salute to a country that hosts great talent.
The line up for the evening featured Jason and Nicholas Goliath, Donovan Goliath, Glen Biderman-Pam, Alfred Adriaan and our very own Durbanite – Richelieu Beaunoir. It was my first time attending an event of this sort at Suncoast and I must say I was quite impressed with the efficiency when entering the venue. The warm welcome and the photo opportunity at the entrance added to the red carpet ambience and definitely allowed mum and I to leave with a memoir that featured our evening of laughter.
The black robed stage welcomed Richelieu with spotlights and as the host for the evening he did not disappoint. He fed of the energy from the crowd and managed to adopt a relationship with us that left us feeling comfortable and ready to consume a giggle or two.
Each of the guys had their very own style but definitely complimented each other’s performances. I must say my personal favourite’s had to be Donavon Goliath’s impression of Jason Stratham as a taxi driver and his charismatic dance moves; as well as Glen Biderman’s old school – new school performance style and his use of the stage space, something I am sure he has learnt from his extensive theatre experience.
Jason Goliath was unfortunately not the highlight of my evening but still managed to leave a smile on people’s faces with his words of wisdom – ‘Be happy and everything else will fall into place’; his brother on the other hand had a coy humour that kicked the night off with just the right amount of hilarity. The guy from a town called – Hanky, Alfred Adriaan, well he was playful and boyish and he hit all the right comedic points. He kept things light but managed to leave an impression.
My favourite had to be our very own Durbanite – Richelieu. He was the link that strung this cast together and he managed to hold onto the crowd’s energy for a whole 2 and a half hours.
Whoever said, laughter is the best medicine – was quite correct in saying so. These guys lifted my mind of things and allowed my mum and I to escape reality for a bit. Thanks for having us and here’s to appreciating South African talent.
