SHORT CHEF SKINNY CHEF LAUNCHED AT DURBAN GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOWSHORT CHEF SKINNY CHEF LAUNCHED AT DURBAN GOOD FOOD & WINE SHOW

Published

on

The Short Chef Skinny Chef theatre will be launched by former MasterChef South Africa competitors Siphokazi Mdlankomo and Claire Allen at this year’s Good Food & Wine Show in Durban.

It’s going to be a MasterChef extravaganza with a host of winners and finalists in action including MasterChef South Africa 2014 winner Roxi Wardman, the leopard- print wearing former train driver assistant from Durban who recently opened her own Durban eatery.

Siphokazi Mdlankomo

Siphokazi Mdlankomo

Says Allen: “The idea for Short Chef Skinny Chef was born in Durban so it is fitting that we are launching the concept here. Sipho and I were roommates in Durban for the MCSA group challenge, we cooked off against each other but Durban was where the idea for SCSC was born. I always knew we would work well together and I am so excited to be finally launching this project.”

Fun, and interactive, this cooking performance will leave audiences full of laughs, learning interesting tips and techniques, pairings, cook’s cheats and recipes they can make at home with ease. Aside from the dynamic duo of Siphokazi and Claire, there will be guest appearances from fellow MasterChef South Africa Season 3 contestants including Roxi, Penny Fitchet and Ndumeso Mncwabe.

The Durban Good Food & Wine Show takes place from October 30 to November 1 at the Durban Exhibition Centre in association with Durban Tourism. There will be book signings with all the celebrity chefs at the show. The visiting chefs will be staying at the Oyster Box Hotel.

MEET THE SHORT CHEF SKINNY CHEF PARTICIPANTS (in alphabetical order)

CLAIRE ALLEN
An entrepreneur by the age of 17 and a successful business owner at 28, Claire Allen is the definition of a self-starter. Cape Town based Claire was born to a family of cooks in Dundee in KZN, where her passion for food was nurtured from a very young age. Claire entered MasterChef South Africa in 2014, and was blown away by the experience. She has since spent the time travelling the world, growing her palate while learning new recipes and cooking techniques. This year she launched Short Chef Skinny Chef with Siphokazi Mdlankomo.

NDUMISO MNCWABE
This ambitious 2014 MasterChef South Africa contestant, Ndumiso Mncwabe  had worked his way up from a bar tender to owning his own bar before he decided to take part in the cooking competition. He says he sees his company having a national footprint in the next five years. He also hopes to marry his bar skills with his passion for food, and then open his own trendy steakhouse, not a shisa nyama. “I am a very attentive and inquisitive guy who watched the entire cooking process when growing up. That’s how my love for food began.”

PENNY FITCHET
Penny Fitchet grew up between Durban and Maritzburg and has been interested in food and cooking for as long as she can remember. Her mother is a great baker while her father makes wonderful Mauritian curries. Her French grandmother was an amazing cook and wine connoisseur. She has travelled the world and loved her time on MasterChef South Africa. Since MasterChef South Africa, Penny has opened her own ice cream shop called ERA Homemade Ice Cream located in Morningside, Durban.

RENAE SMITH
Thanks to encouragement from her children, Renae Smith applied to become a contestant on MasterChef Australia.  Her successful audition eventually saw her place in the Top 10 where she became known for her love of local ingredients, healthy cooking and vegetarian food.  Labelled the “Mystery Box Queen” by the other contestants, Renae’s ability to create dishes full of flavour with minimal ingredients ensured she gained the judges attention. Since the series ended, Renae has worked closely with Barnardo’s Australia and created the “Cooking from the Cupboard” concept whereby she teaches children to create healthy, cheap meals with whatever ingredients are in the cupboard.

ROXANNE WARDMAN
Roxanne Wardman is the 2014 MasterChef South Africa Season 3 winner. From a young age she experimented with tastes and textures, spices, heat, sweet and salty. From this, she found her ultimate passion, baking! She moved to Durban from Mpumalanga at 18 and started working as a train driver’s assistant for Transnet. The shifts gave her the freedom to play around with food and work towards her dream of making food her career. Since winning MasterChef, this had come true and she recently opened Spoonful Eatery in Morningside in Durban.

SIPHOKAZI MDLANKOMO
Domestic worker Siphokazi Mdlankomo captured the hearts of South Africans as she cooked her way to the final of the third season of MasterChef South Africa. Growing up near Umtata her mother and grandmother taught her everything about cooking. She reflects on her MasterChef journey: “I learnt a lot on the show, from patience to creativity and respecting the ingredients I use in my cooking. I also realise I have talent and that I have lot of fun in front of the camera – and would love to work as an on camera chef teaching others how to cook. This year she launched Short Chef Skinny Chef with Claire Allen.

Splashy Fen 2025: An Inspiring Long Weekend of Music, Magic, and Memories in the Drakensberg

Published

on

By

Splashy Fen Music Festival has officially wrapped, and by all accounts, the 2025 edition was the most magical one yet. From the moment the gates opened on Thursday, 17 April to the last note played on Sunday night, 8,000 festival-goers soaked up four glorious days of sunshine, music, and connection in the heart of the Southern Drakensberg.

After a few days of pre-festival rain, the weather turned just in time to welcome fans to South Africa’s friendliest music festival. The sunshine held strong throughout the weekend, setting the tone for what would become an unforgettable Easter celebration filled with laughter, dancing, and community.

A SOLD-OUT FESTIVAL FROM DAY ONE

By Thursday evening, over 5,500 happy campers had already made their way into the scenic Splashy Fen farm, with the festival officially reaching full capacity the day before the gates even opened. The 2025 edition was officially opened by Cllr. T.N. Jojozi, Deputy Mayor of the Harry Gwala District Municipality, who welcomed guests on behalf of the Harry Gwala Development Agency.

Thursday night kicked off with the first wave of live performances and set the tone for the weekend.

From there, the lineup only got hotter.

DAYS OF MUSIC AND MAGIC

Friday and Saturday were packed with showstopping performances across the multiple stages. Local heroes like Ard Matthews, Hot Water, Veranda Panda, and Prime Circle brought the heat, while the Main Stage turned electric with international artists including the UK’s Youngr, a surprise performance from Casey Lowery, Ireland’s Darren Kiely, and Canada’s Neon Dreams.

Mafikizolo delivered a legendary Saturday night set that brought thousands to their feet, and GoodLuck closed out the evening with a high-energy performance that had the whole crowd bouncing.

Away from the stages, festival-goers enjoyed the full Splashy experience: sunrise yoga, trail runs, live art, craft workshops, and plenty of family-friendly fun. The popular Kids Zone was buzzing with activity, and the Saturday afternoon Splashy Parade was a visual feast of stilt-walkers, dragons, fire breathers, and whimsical characters.

At the Corona River Stage, guests kicked back in the sun to chilled tunes by the water, while a bustling craft market and food court offered up everything from gourmet bites to handmade treasures.

A SUNDAY TO REMEMBER

Easter Sunday was pure joy. The day began with a peaceful morning service hosted by Red Frogs SA at the tranquil Treehouse Stage, followed by a fun-filled Easter egg hunt for the little ones—complete with games, giggles, and surprise eggs from the Easter Bunny herself.

Music lovers made their way to the Acoustic Stage for the much-loved Legends of the Fen showcase. Featuring iconic acts like Cinema, Perez, and more, the session reminded everyone why Splashy Fen holds such a special place in South Africa’s music history.

As the sun dipped behind the Drakensberg mountains, the Main Stage roared to life for one final night of performances, closing out the weekend with soaring vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and thunderous applause.

“Our legs are sore, our voices are gone, but our hearts? FULL,” read a Monday morning post from Splashy Fen’s official social media page. “Shoutout to every artist who brought the fire at Main Stage last night, and every fan who screamed every word. What a way to end #Splashy2025!”

THE BEST ONE YET

With four full days of world-class music, family-friendly fun, and community connection in one of the most beautiful festival locations in the world, Splashy Fen 2025 has earned its title as the best one yet.
