Hope begins with you…

Published

The Sunflower Fund enters a new era with the appointment of new Chief Executive Officer, Alana James, who joined the Fund in September 2015, bringing a wealth of experience, global insight and an exciting new operational plan for the organisation.

“I am delighted to play a part in the ongoing success of The Sunflower Fund, I’m excited to walk this road with staff, patients and board members,” says James. She added that one of the most exciting elements of stewarding the new organisational strategy has been the shift in focus to ‘community’.

“The diagnosis of a dread disease like leukaemia is not only devastating to the individual, but is equally traumatising for family, friends and colleagues. It leaves no-one untouched and our job is to reach out to this community, supporting it the best way we know how – through our expertise in increasing donor numbers for the South African Bone Marrow Registry.”

With this in mind, the Fund is debuting its new tag line: Hope begins with you, reflecting the mission and values of the organisation. With every prospective donor or informed patient, The Sunflower Fund brings Hope to someone’s child, someone’s parent, someone’s friend. Change is good, and along with the new tag line, the organisation has updated its annual campaign. Running from August to the end of September, the highlight is ‘Sunflower Day’, which takes place on 16 September.

James adds that the organisation’s iconic bandana has also undergone a facelift: “Along with our longstanding partner and sponsor, Pick n Pay, we undertook extensive market research at the end of 2015 and realised that it was time to ring in the changes. Earlier this month, we unveiled our new commemorative product known as the Tope – Tube of Hope! An updated version of the bandana, reflecting the renewed enthusiasm and excitement at the Fund, the Tope promises to be a bestseller!”

With its unique design and selection of colours, the Tope is an affordable product with practical functionality for the entire family, and goes on sale in August 2016.

“And that’s not all,” adds James, “we are excited to introduce you to some new faces! Please visit our website, www.sunflowerfund.org.za, to meet a new group of characters called ‘The Sunflower Fund Myth Busters’, who will educate and entertain you when you visit the site. Let us know what you think of our new ambassadors on Twitter or Facebook!”

James is clearly passionate about growth and impact “Progress is impossible without change and we look forward to achieving our goals with some exciting changes this year”.

“Thank you for your continued support and don’t forget to save the date, 16th September 2016!” she concludes.

The Sunflower Fund’s mission is to educate, register and fund the medical costs of individuals wishing to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

The enrolment process is simple and it takes just two test tubes of blood to register as a stem cell donor on the SABMR.

In order to ensure that cost is not a limiting factor for a prospective donor, The Sunflower Fund bears the costs of the initial test. It is greatly appreciated when contribution is made towards the test cost to allow the organisation to reach more potential donors.

Should you wish to become a donor, support one of the fundraising projects or make a financial contribution, please contact The Sunflower Fund on toll-free number: 0800 12 10 82 or visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za for more information.

Start off 2020 right with Compass Health Centre

Published

on

By

All too often it is the doctor who gets all of the information about the patient, and the patient gets very little information about the doctor and his practice. Dr Michael Wiggett would like to change that.

Growing up in JHB, he saw the light and made the move to Durban in 2006 and never looked back.

Through numerous injuries he developed his love for chiropractic, sports medicine and the love of being able to help people. Michael’s injuries were not coming right through the treatments he was receiving. He finally went to his family chiropractor and enjoyed the different perspective in the assessment done, treatments offered and integrated approach to the body’s systems.

With treatments from the chiropractor, not only did the pain go away, but so did other issues. This showed Michael the power of the adjustment, and now I make sure I get adjusted once a week at our weekly meetings! I believe it’s important to do what you love!

We sat down with Dr Michael at Compass Health Centre to ask him a few questions.

——————

1) Tell us more about yourself?
I grew up in JHB but saw the light and made the move to Durban in 2006 and have never looked back. My lifestyle is an active one, especially if it involves anything to do with water. My hobbies involve surfing and kite surfing; essentially trying to get into the water as much as possible. I find it such a great place to clear the mind and escape from the day-to-day stress of life. This is so important for your overall health. I also played hockey at a provincial and national level.

2) How did Compass Health Centre come about?
Compass Health Centre came about when Bruce Grant and myself teamed up and wanted to create something special where the greater Durban North Community. We wanted to team up and give care to more people so that they can live better quality lives. We opened our doors in October 2018.

3) Why is it important to have chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care helps with many things within the body. Each adjustment allows for correct and full flow of neurological information between each cell of the body and the brain. Without this the body will stiff function but will function at a reduced percentage. Remember you only have one spine, you have to take care of it. In the current medical world we don’t have spinal or vertebrae replacements, and need to make sure that we are moving properly to prevent degeneration.

4) What are the benefits of having chiro?
With neck and low back pain being number 3 and 5 of the most common problems in todays world seen by medical professionals, it is important to have someone that is educated in spinal function and biomechanics. We have had numerous patients that were told they need surgery and through correct care and rehab, we were able to not only prevent the surgery but allow them to go back to doing the things they loved. Chiropractors are also not only trained in spinal areas, but in the body as a whole. We have numerous patients that come in and see us for ankle strains, hamstring tears, shoulder pain etc.

5) Do you have any day-to-day tips for managing better posture?
to start off, set up your computer, your desk ergonomically correct, as well as your car. Sit upright. We talk a lot about sitting posture as this is what 90% of us do each day, all day. But posture is not just about how you sit, it’s about how you stand, how you walk, how you pick something up. You have to continually think about posture all day every day!

6) What is one thing you wish your patients knew?
People often say ‘its (pain) been there for a while’, and this is makes everything worse. You don’t function the same when you are in pain, you biomechanics change which result in degeneration in other area. It may not be now that you feel it, but you will feel it later in life. I always compare the body to a car, if your car was making a weird noise, click, smoking or anything, you immediately take it to the garage to get looked at and fixed, WHY don’t you do the same for your body?

7) How can one book a session with you?
You can book a session by phoning 0315631314 or you can book online through our website: www.compasshc.co.za

8) How many sessions does a patient typically require?
This is a tough question, what you must understand is everyone is different, everyone moves difficulty, everyone problem is different, at a different stage. Some patients don’t listen, while some do. So it’s really hard to say how many sessions each patient requires. Usually by the 2nd or 3rd session I am able to give a rough idea, but this is also variable.

9) Any other comments you would like to add?
If your company would like us to come for what we call a ‘lunch and learn’, please get hold of us. We will go through correct computer set ups, talk about the importance of posture and ask any questions you may have absolutely FREE!

Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: Alice In Wonderland

Published

on

KickstArt’s family end-of-year 2019 pantomime is a spectacular new production based on the classic book by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 29 November until 5 January.

Durban’s daring and bold theatre production company, KickstArt, has a reputation of staging fabulous, inventive and extravagant family festive season pantomimes every Christmas since 2004. The panto is always the culmination of their theatrical year. This year KickstArt’s programme at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre has included Noel Coward’s delicious Private Lives in October and Charlotte’s Web in July. They also staged the glorious comedy, Shirley Valentine for the Women’s Arts Festival at the Playhouse. Their productions are seen by over 40,000 people every year.

This new version of Alice in Wonderland, offers a glorious array of zany, topsy-turvy characters, including colourful puppets as well as magical scenery, vibrant costumes, topical jokes and toe-tapping songs.

Written and directed by Steven Stead, and designed by Greg King, the show stars Georgina Mabbett as Alice, with Liesl Coppin as the Queen of Hearts, Belinda Henwood as the White Queen, Mthokozisi Zulu as the White Rabbit, Blessing Xaba as Nurse Nora Knowalot, Lyle Buxton as the Mad Hatter, Roland Perold as the Knave of Hearts, and Ewok Iain Robinson and James Cuningham as Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.

Alice In Wonderland

Alice In Wonderland

The story was originally a novel written in 1865 by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) about the adventures of a young girl, Alice, who accidentally falls down a rabbit hole into a mystical fantasy world of quirky characters and bizarre animals.

The tale is full of riddles and conundrums accessible to both adult and children readers and is one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre of its time. An array of quotes from Alice have become absorbed into popular parlance. Some of the best loved ones include: “Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast”; “Curiouser and curiouser!” and “We’re all mad here.”

Ticket Prices: Adults R250 / R200 / R150. Children, Students, Pensioners R200 / R180 / R120. Schools’ and Preview Performances: R140 throughout (No discounts). Book at Computicket.

REVIEW: The Grange Guest House

Published

on

By

Situated in Upper Durban North, The Grange was one of the first BnBs in Durban. Being a house with a history, no two rooms are alike, with each offering their unique features and with a sea view.

Three of us girls from Durbanite were recently treated to a stay at The Grange Guest House.

Before checking in, we stopped at the shops to grab a few essentials needed for a girl’s night; snacks for dinner, wine and face masks!

Upon arrival at The Grange, we were greeted by the property’s lovely dog. Being huge dog lovers ourselves, we were beyond thrilled that this place loved animals.

We checked in and were given keys to our room which had x2 double beds and an en-suite bathroom with a balcony.

Relaxing at the pool – Total bliss!

Of course, the first thing we did was check out the pool where we enjoyed some snacks and caught up with each other – as girls do on girlfriend getaways 😉

So what do girls really get up to at Girlfriend’s Getaways? Well… for us it was just an evening of putting on face masks, watching movies and stuffing our faces with delicious snacks.

PERFECTION.

Sometimes you need to just get away from everything and have a night in with your girlfriends, and The Grange Guest House was the ideal location for that. It’s also made to feel extremely homely and cosy, as if you were right at home. We loved it!

In the morning, we were served a scrumptious breakfast tailor made to suit our preferences.

Our host, Trisha was incredibly accommodating throughout our stay and had the best advice on what to do and where to go.
We highly recommend The Grange Guest House for anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing accommodation.
