The JanYOUary I heart Market
After the whirlwind that is the festive season, it’s time to get back to that special person in your life… you! “But how?” you may be wondering after you slowly exit your charitable December stupor. Maybe some meditation, maybe a hamburgers-only diet or maybe instead of gym, you park your car far away from the shopping mall entrance to get those steps in for your medical aid benefits. What’s important though, is that you do you! Which is why you should consider the I heart Market on the 5th of January 2019. You’ve given your time, energy and money to others all holiday long and now it’s time to Treat. Yo. Self.
This coming I heart Market, take a taxi (unless you need those medical aid steps), have a cocktail before midday and spoil yourself with that new wardrobe item you’ve had your eye on! And if your wardrobe is full, your stomach won’t be so treat yourself to lunch and a sweet treat or five. It’s all about being a bit less wary and a bit more OTT.
If you need more ideas, we spoke to some I heart Market traders about how they like to treat themselves when market day rolls around. Kim Houston, owner of Buhle Tees and Accessories is no stranger to treating herself. She loves accessories and says at this coming I heart Market, “I will be looking out for something that will remind me of that queen I am so I’ll be looking for something to add another jewel to my crown.”
Inspirational! Owner of Kanine Krunchies, Larissa Bhagwandin, donates a portion of her profits to local animal rescue organisations so she is all about giving to others. Even so, she still has time to give to herself. She likes to take days off to take her pug, Edgar Allan, to the park or the beach to enjoy the lovely Durban sunshine. She says that this does wonders for her mental health. And when she’s trading at the market, she hunts down the strongest cup of artisanal coffee that she can find. “I can be broke, but I’ll never be too broke for an iced coffee!” Hear hear! If anybody knows a thing or two about treating yourself, surely Caryn Andrews, owner of t.spn does. It would seem that being a purveyor of delicious baked goods makes you crave… olives from Simply More? She says she wouldn’t call this a sneaky treat because, “olives are good for you, right?” While Andrews is after olives, the general consensus among traders is that you can’t leave the market without a t.spn brownie.
Hopefully, by now, you’ve got some ideas to put yourself first in January before you resume to your regular altruistic self. The I heart Market takes place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium from 9 AM to 2 PM and there’ll be parking for all of you who aren’t treating yourself to a taxi. Remember to bring your reusables because while this market is all about you, the planet needs some love too!

Back by popular demand, Durban comedy favourites Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert-McIlroy return to the Northlands Bowling Club, in Durban North for audiences who missed the show the first time around.
Expect old favourite characters and a soundtrack packed with thumping hits as McIlroy and Bobbert once again deliver their trademark blend of side-splitting humour, larger-than-life personalities, and musical mayhem!
Some characters to expect; Bruce and Charmaine as unforgettable Elvis impersonators, Dot and Max settling into the chaos of retirement village life, and everyone’s favourite philosopher of the people, Dr Veejay, offering his “words of wisdom.” Add in a host of hilarious new faces, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a fun night out!
Directed and choreographed by the sensational Daisy Spencer, Bump and Grind promises to keep audiences on their feet — or rolling in the aisles — with laughter, music, and McIlroy & Bobbert’s unbeatable comic chemistry.
