FLATFOOT ACCESS DANCE FESTIVAL 2022

Published

on

Durban’s much-loved FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY is delighted to offer its first FLATFOOT ACCESS DANCE FESTIVAL 2022 at 6.30pm on 25 November at the Courtyard Theatre, Durban University of Technology. Three new works created by FLAFTFOOT will be showcased celebrating the power of dance to transcend narrow definitions of who can dance.

FLATFOOT’s approach to community dance development in KZN, has seen it offering what artistic director, Dr. Lliane Loots calls, “a dance philosophy and practice we refer to as ‘living democracy’ where we find ways to make dance accessible to all no matter physical or intellectual ability, geography, race, gender and any other intersectional category around identity”.

The Company has nationally spearheaded one of South Africa’s only dance programmes with dancers living with Down Syndrome affectionately called the FLATFOOT Downie Dance Company. This programme began in 2017 and continues with four incredible dancers, Kevin Govender, Michaela Munro, Charles Phillips and Karl Hebbelman. Working in a partnering methodology that sees the FLATFOOT company dancers working alongside, this festival offers three works.

The first is Loots’s collaboration with the dancers called ‘same difference’ that premiered to standing ovations at SIBIKWA’s Body Moves Festival in Johannesburg in October 2022. Loots says, “same difference is an idiomatic phrase often used in English that indicates that two things are not really different in any important way. This was the starting point into creating a dance work that plots the meetings and partings of a group of 8 South African dancers who journey into way of seeing one another”.

The second work on offer, sees FLATFOOT partnering with guest choreographer from Chicago (USA) Sydney Erlikh who has come to Durban to share integrated dance practices with FLATFOOT.  Erlikh is an artist, educator and doctoral candidate in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago. She was co-awarded a 2019-2020 Schweitzer Fellowship which lead to the creation of the Inclusive Dance Workshop Series at Access Living in Chicago. Talking about her new work with FLATFOOT and the FLATFOOT Downie Dance Company called “Shield of the Heart”, Erlikh says “in a world where safety is a concern, those who guide you become a shield you wear on your heart. We all came together here in Durban as a disability community to share knowledge and culture. This dance work – our dance work – is a score that will never be the same. Through it, we share our vulnerability and create safety for one another. The dance piece asks where you find safety and who has been a shield for your heart”.

The final work on the programme is a collaboration between Loots, FLATFOOT and Julia Pitt, a dancer living with cerebral palsy. Julia has always considered herself a dancer and has literally watched every local performance FLATFOOT has ever done. A chance meeting started a working process in February of 2022, and this festival offers Julia’s first public performance with the company. Loots has worked collaboratively with Pitt and FLATFOOT’s Jabu Siphika and Zinhle Nzama to create an intimated and moving trio called “perpetual motion”.

Tickets are R50. Seating is limited so booking is essential. Contact Clare on flatfootdancecompany@gmail.com

Pre-booked tickets can be collected at the Courtyard box office from 45mins before the start of show on Friday 25 November

Review: Create Ceramics Umhlanga

Published

Create Ceramics Umhlanga is a vibrant ceramic painting café located at 16 Chartwell Drive, Granada Square, Umhlanga. Open daily from 9am to 5pm, it offers a creative oasis for individuals and groups to unwind and express their artistic flair.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our seats. The inviting atmosphere, complemented by soft 70’s music, set the perfect backdrop for our creative journey. We were offered beverages from their café menu, which includes a selection of tea/coffee, curated wines, and light bites. The homemade 100% beef burgers paired with hand-cut potato chips are particularly noteworthy.

Choosing a ceramic piece was both exciting and challenging due to the extensive range available, with prices ranging from R100 to R650. The selection includes items like butter dishes, bird feeders, salad bowls, and various animals for the kids. We opted for large fruit bowls, appreciating the ample space they provided for our designs.

Before diving into painting, a friendly staff member introduced us to various techniques, such as using stickers, smudging, and scraping designs onto the paint. Her guidance was great and sparked our creativity. With our chosen paints and brushes, we spent the next hour immersed in our artwork, sipping on cappuccinos and enjoying the therapeutic ambiance.

Once satisfied with our designs, lemons for me and grapefruit with leaves for my mom – we signed the bottoms of our bowls with our names and order numbers. The staff informed us that the pieces would undergo glazing and setting, and they would contact us once ready for collection.

Field Notes (an exhibition): 1 – 17 November 2024

Field Notes (an exhibition)
Presented by Contemporary Archive Project
Opening: 1 November 2024 at 6 PM
Venue: The Chairman, Durban.

In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, stories are marked like pins scattered across a map. These pins cluster in the city of eThekwini or are more sparsely spread through the landscapes of Nquthu, Tugela, and Amaotana. By mapping out and noting where the photographs were made, the explorers’ tracks reveal a wide, eclectic range of stories, each reflecting individual narratives. In these collections, the photographers are the explorers of their own stories, presenting clips and field notes that present an Insider’s view.

Subverting old tropes of Outsiders looking in, disconnected from a culture or space, the photographs that make this exhibition present intimate representations of faith and religion, culture and rituals, life and death, solitude and community. The collective way of seeing a city and space are all informed by each photographer’s way of seeing.
In this gathering, we present moments from each photographer’s archive. Guided by the visual connections of the photographs, the exhibition’s content invites you to reflect on the themes of fragility, power, togetherness, and the significance of the spaces we call home.

The group exhibition features work from CAP’s archive, inclusive of:
Andile Ndunge, Andre Swart, Mandisa Buthelezi, Myllo Menorah, Niamh Walsh-Vorster, Paulo Menezes, Robyn Perros, Seraz Abrahams, Sibusiso Gcaba, and Thobani Khumalo.
This exhibition is made possible by the National Lotteries Commission.
