NOW OPEN: Cornubia Mall

Published

on

MEC for KwaZulu Natal Human Settlements and Public Works, Mr Ravi Pillay, together with Darryl Mayers, Head of Investec Property South Africa and other City dignitaries, have officially opened the 65 000m² brand new Cornubia Mall near Mount Edgecombe, KZN. The Mall opened its doors amid much fanfare and excitement from shoppers and retailers alike today (September 28, 2017).

“The opening of Cornubia Mall, marks a major milestone for its investors, the City, the various stakeholders and the people of this community, as it is the manifestation of big sky thinking that can be achieved in partnership between government and business,” said Cllr Sipho Kaunda in his address at the launch event.

“The Mall, set within the Cornubia Presidential project, acts as a link on so many levels between a number of communities from varied economic backgrounds and heralds opportunities for employment, skills transfers, economic growth and development. The role of this Mall, together with other developments set to come on line in the near future, must continue to carve out new ways of addressing the economic disparity that is still widespread across our City. We are happy to see that the Mall has taken up the charge and continues to work with its local communities in creating a sustainable Cornubia community.”

“Now home to over 110 retailers, we are thrilled to see the Mall completed after 8 years in the making – from acquiring the land until the doors were opened today, this has been an immense project,” said Mayers. “We have brought a number of firsts to KwaZulu-Natal’s communities from Bounce Trampoline Park, Cycle Lab megastore, Fives Futbol, Consol Glass and a 7-screen Nu Metro cinema complex featuring 4DX to being one of the only malls to offer all three large food retailers (Pick ‘n Pay, Checkers and SPAR).”

“This indoor/outdoor mall was designed with activities and experiences for the whole family in mind and offers world-class shopping, entertainment and an outdoor lifestyle for an active community. We are thrilled to have been able to save a 112-year-old historic Natal Fig tree and incorporated this into the mall to offer a great viewpoint of the entire centre,” said Mayers.

“There is room for further growth of the mall and there is already a plan underway for a 20 000m² expansion in the future. The second phase will include a further 70 stores that would be added. The mall has brought infrastructure, jobs and skills transfer and improved transport to residents within the Cornubia development and surrounding communities. We estimate that it will create about 1 100 permanent jobs, while at least 2 500 temporary jobs were created during construction. We encouraged the retailers to employ from the surrounding communities. To date we helped 1 100 people with work readiness programmes and just under 300 people were hired. This will be an ongoing journey to create local employment opportunities,” Mayers added.

Central to the ethos of the Cornubia Mall is connecting into the local community in a meaningful manner to help support them. “We will soon be launching the Cornubia Mall Trust and will work very closely with community members to assist with needs in their communities with a focus on education, entrepreneurship and infrastructure initiatives through this trust,” concluded Mayers.

Review: Ghost Mountain Inn

Published

on

There’s something magical about escaping the bustle of Durban and heading into Zululand for a weekend of tranquility, warm hospitality, and adventure. Our stay at Ghost Mountain Inn was nothing short of unforgettable – from the moment we arrived, we were wrapped in the comfort of this family-friendly lodge set against the dramatic backdrop of Ghost Mountain itself.

The staff at Ghost Mountain Inn were incredibly warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home from the start. To our delight, we were upgraded to a stunning suite. Waiting inside was a thoughtful welcome: chilled champagne and a beautifully prepared platter of strawberries, fruit, and cheese. The suite itself was spacious — perfect for a romantic couple’s getaway, yet roomy enough to comfortably host families. With an outdoor shower, a tub, and all the amenities you could need, it was the kind of place you don’t want to leave.

Exploring the Lodge
Our first day was spent exploring the lodge. A highlight was the stylish bar near reception, where cocktails flow as easily as the Zululand sunsets. Dinner that evening was a treat: a lively braai buffet where the chefs grilled everything to perfection. The spread included an impressive variety of salads, sides, starters, and a dessert station that made it impossible not to indulge.

Adding to the atmosphere, the lodge was abuzz with energy thanks to a cricket tournament hosted during our stay. The vibe was vibrant and social, with families and groups of friends gathering across the lodge’s many spaces.

Family Fun & Outdoor Adventures
Ghost Mountain Inn is truly family-friendly, and we discovered this even more on our second day. The property has not one but two kid-friendly pools, perfect for both relaxation and play. Beyond the pools, a wooden jetty leads out across the dam – a picturesque spot where you might spot hippos if you’re lucky (we weren’t this time, but the view was worth it). All the while, the looming presence of Ghost Mountain provides the perfect backdrop for those picture-perfect Instagram moments.

Of course, no Zululand trip is complete without a game drive. We ventured into the Mkuze area, where the Big Five roam. The experience of spotting lions, leopards, buffalo, and other wildlife in their natural habitat was a highlight of our trip.

Dining Experiences
Mealtimes at Ghost Mountain Inn are as much a highlight as the activities. For lunch, we enjoyed the casual outdoor restaurant with its pizza oven, serving up fresh pizzas alongside hearty burgers, pastas, and light bites. Dinner the next evening offered something different – a set menu with options ranging from steak to chicken, catering to a wide variety of tastes. Whether you’re in the mood for a buffet feast or a relaxed à la carte meal, there’s always something to suit.

Final Thoughts
Our weekend at Ghost Mountain Inn was a perfect blend of comfort, adventure, and family-friendly fun. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a weekend with friends, or a family bush holiday, this Zululand gem offers something for everyone.

With warm hospitality, beautiful surroundings, and endless activities, Ghost Mountain Inn is a destination we’ll keep recommending to Durbanites looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.
