INTRODUCTION

On the 31st August 2013 the doors to Durban City Hall shall open at 5pm to mark the start of Interpret Durban 4. Interpret Durban 4 (or ID4 as its more commonly called) as an event has all the hallmarks of being the kind of experience those who attend talk about for weeks after, and those who don’t lament for a full year before getting a chance to see what all the fuss was about when the next one comes around. So what’s it all about then?

Interpret Durban is a multi-faceted creative contest running throughout the month of August. Artists are called to get involved in the various categories and the competition culminates in the main Interpret Durban event, which features exhibitions of the selected submissions, the awards ceremony, live music and needless to say…party.

2010 marked the first INTERPRET DURBAN, an event inspired by a city and her people. 4 years later, the event has grown from being an independent creation to a fully fledged public celebration but its core stays 031. As testimony to the growth in popularity of this event the 4th edition is housed in the very bosom of eThekwini itself, Durban City Hall.

THE MAIN EVENT

The ID4 main event takes place on August 31st at Durban’s 103 year old City Hall. The purpose of the event is to recognise and award the best creative contest submissions as selected by a host of industry specific judges, and naturally have one whopper of a party in the heart of the city. The night is packed to the hilt with entertainment: exhibitions, live art competitions, performances as well as interactive elements including silent art auctions of some of the pieces created on the night.

On top of this smorgasbord of entertainment, ID4 are proud to offer up a lineup guaranteed to get everyone’s takkies, pumps, flipflops and boots squeaking across the dance floor. The lineup includes Durban Gypsy-Funk-Punk rockers The Accidentals alongside the ever lively foot stomping favorites The Trees. For those Hip Hop fiends out there, proud son of the 031 Prinston will be taking to the ID4 stage during the night. Thanks to Red Bull studios Cape Town ID4 we’ll also be hosting Youngsta and Audiophile fresh from the Mother City bringing a real Western Cape flavor to this Durban musical curry. Always keen to bring balance to a good time Red Bull Studios CT will also be returning one of Durban’s long lost sons to the event in the form of the one and only Felix Laband just off the plane from his Argentinean tour. Two more artists complete the bill who need no introduction, Crazy White Boy and Veranda Panda top the lineup and both are said to be working on sets for the evening aimed at raising the copper roof clear off Durban City Hall.

SHUTTLE SERVICE

ID4 has made a free shuttle service available to its patrons come the night of the event. The shuttle begins its route from 5pm. The two pick up points are outside the KZNSA on Bulwer Road in Glenwood and at The Cube on Innes road in Morningside. The Shuttle will depart KZNSA on the hour every hour and arrive some 15/20 min later at The Cube where it will stop before heading off to City Hall. The shuttle will be on a loop for the duration of the event with the last shuttle scheduled to depart City Hall at 1:40am. There will be guards stationed at both drop off points to ensure safety of the cars left behind so you can relax knowing that all is well.
