“Vermeer & Music” screens at Gateway Nouveau on the following days / times:
Wednesday, 30 October 19:30
Thursday, 31 October 19:30
The third production in the EXHIBITION ON SCREEN series is entitled Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure. Filmed in London, New York, Washington DC, the Hague, Delft and Amsterdam, the film shows over half of Vermeer’s stunning paintings in high-definition on the big screen – for the first time ever. It will be released exclusively at Cinema Nouveau theatres around South Africa on Saturday, 26 October, for four screenings only – 26, 27, 30 and 31 October.
The production, which focuses on the exhibition staged at The National Gallery in London, offers a fresh look at one of the most startling and fascinating artists of all – Johannes Vermeer, painter of the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring. The National Gallery has chosen to focus on Vermeer’s relationship with music, as it is one of the most popular themes of Dutch painting and reveals an enormous amount about the sitter and the society in which they lived. New research, revealed for the first time at this exhibition, shows how his technique and materials affected his works.
Host Tim Marlow goes beyond the exhibition to tell the entire story of Vermeer’s life – and, in doing so, shows in fabulous HD detail many other of the artist’s captivating works. For those inspired by the 2003 film, Girl with a Pearl Earring, starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson, this new, cinematic exploration will take their enjoyment and fascination of Vermeer’s life and work to a new level.
“Just occasionally, something will crop up that restores your faith in humanity’s future. The huge appetite for cinematic ‘private views’ hosted by experts is one such thing. The kind of trend that makes you optimistic about the future of civilization. ‘Leonardo Live’ was the pioneer. These new events totally reinvent the private view, replacing it with a more intelligent style of celebration that has been invented for these occasions. You see the exhibition on screen and learn about it from curators and commentators. It’s fun but informative – and becoming a global phenomenon…” – The Guardian UK
PhilGrabskyfilms.com, in association with Seventh Art Productions and BY Experience, presents EXHIBITION ON SCREEN, a series of ground-breaking art events created for the cinema that connect major international art exhibitions with millions of art lovers across more than 30 countries. The seriesallows art lovers of all ages to enjoy, marvel, delight and more deeply understand the works of some of history’s most beloved painters.
Featuring major exhibitions from artists such as Manet, Munch and Vermeer, each cinema event captures and explores these important shows, going behind-the-scenes to bring a wealth of information about the masterpieces to audiences via state-of-the-art digital cinema technology. Tim Marlow, noted art historian and broadcaster, and his special guests guide theatre audiences through each exhibition and deliver unique insights into the lives and inspirations of the artists.
About the new Vermeer production, multi-award-winning arts documentary maker Phil Grabsky commented: “Vermeer and Music from the National Gallery in London is finally finished and ready to be enjoyed in cinemas around the globe. Even if you don’t want to listen to a word of narrative, I do recommend that you make your way to a comfy cinema seat and revel in the wonder of Vermeer’s brushwork.
“It’s easy to throw terms like ‘greatness’ and ‘genius’ around but they really do apply to this extraordinary 17th century Dutch artist. Some worry that because he left no correspondence behind him, there’s little to say. Far from it, his life story can be pieced together like a fabulous detective novel. I really can’t urge you highly enough to turn the smart phones off for 90 minutes and indulge in some of the finest paintings ever made.
“I have been driven by the desire to share the thrill of great exhibitions with everyone from Kansas City to Adelaide, Osaka to Naples, and Glasgow to Cape Town. Vermeer is considered to be one of the greatest artists of all time. This EXHIBITION screening is not only a perfect introduction to his art for the whole family, but also a way to see some of the world’s greatest galleries, exhibitions and paintings, all from the comfort of a cinema seat.”
Echoing Grabsky’s comments, Tim Marlow adds: “I think that standing face to face with some of the greatest works of art ever made is one of the most powerful experiences in life. EXHIBITION ON SCREEN gives us the opportunity to convey something of this power in a cinematic format which brings the viewer as close to the real thing as possible. Sometimes, the camera reveals even more than the naked eye …”
Julie Borchard-Young from BY Experience says: “Art-lovers of all ages are in for a treat! Through the in-cinema events, audiences will have the unprecedented opportunity to travel the global arts spectrum, sharing in an intimate experience together in their local communities. We are thrilled to distribute EXHIBITION ON SCREEN to cinema screens globally.”
