Drifting at Dezzi Dazzled Fans
The AutoTrader SupaDrift Series Returned to KZN, 31 May 2014
The Dezzi Raceway played its part this Saturday, 31st May, by providing the perfect track conditions for what was one of the smoothest running, but most technically thrilling events in the AutoTrader SupaDrift Championship series. Over 35 drivers set out around the affectionately nicknamed ‘corkscrew track’ in Port Shepstone, each driver trying to out do the next.
“The judges had their work cut out for them this weekend. The technical showmanship was impressive,” said presenting sponsor, AutoTrader CEO, George Mienie.

The track demanded a substantial power outlay from the vehicles as they made their way from the bowl of the track up towards the finish. Crowd favourite Jason Webb failed to qualify, leaving room for KZN favourites to battle it out. Hannes Frans faced Riaz Alibai, and Jono Rudman took on Morne Venter, with Rudman and Frans moving forward to the next round.
Cape Town favourite, Faheem Sallie, had a lot to prove going in to the Port Shepstone event, following his shake up on home turf in the previous challenge. His gallant efforts on Saturday paid off and saw him finish 9th to reinforce his drifting chops to the crowd.

Local favourite Shane Gutzeit beat out Sean February in the Top 8 after two perfect runs.
Van Zummerun smashed his quarter-final runs to beat BG Smit and advance to the semi-finals. KZN local Paulo Gouveia put on a show of smoke and flare as he challenged Hannes Frans to a giant battle around the track, which ended with Gouveia joining van Zummerun in the semi’s.
The actioned was turned up a gear going in to the semi-finals – Gutzeit faced Jono Rudman and van Zummeren squared up to Gouveia.
Gouveia kept up with van Zummeren until the second run when van Zummeren’s technical performance earned him a two-point lead and a spot in the final. Gutziet sent Rudman packing and prepared to face van Zummeren.
Both drivers put on two perfect runs in the final, forcing the judges to call a One More Time. A five-minute Time Out gave both drivers the opportunity to recharge and reset their focus. On Gutzeit’s turn to lead, his car cut out at the start line, sending van Zummeren charging off on to the track alone. All that was needed to secure the title was for van Zummeren to complete his turn to lead.
“Congratulations go to Shane Green who was named Driver of the Day after his smoking hot rounds against the ultimate winner Wade van Zummerun. He put on a great show!” said Liqui Moly spokesperson, Melicia Labuschagne.
The drivers will return to the Dezzi Raceway on the 28th June 2014 for what is guaranteed to be an epic battle of smoke and sound, as the championship passes the halfway mark.

Journey across the Marigold Bridge with Miguel from Disney●Pixar’s Coco into the magnificent and mystical Land of the Dead and discover a vibrantly colorful performance with skeletons atop sway poles dancing over the audience in a beautiful cultural celebration of family.
Travel to the wintry world of Arendelle and sing along with Elsa as video projection creates a kaleidoscope of crystals to help build her ice palace. Witness Belle lift into the sky as the enchanted chandelier comes to life high over the ice. Demonstrate the power of teamwork when Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jessie recruit the Green Army Men for a daring rescue in Andy’s room. GRAMMY® Award-winning jazz vocalist Gregory Porter’s Durban International Convention Centre show on Saturday 15 November will feature pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini and singer-songwriter Omagugu, performing alongside each other.
These celebrated South African musicians have been married for more than a decade, having become friends while playing together earlier in their careers. Both were born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal. Omagugu studied music at the University of KwaZulu Natal, Tshwane University of Technology and later, at the University of Fort Hare where she graduated with in Honours in Music. Similarly, Nduduzo did his undergraduate studies at the University of KwaZulu Natal and later completed both his Masters and PhD studies at the University of Stellenbosch.
Both artists are touring musicians with a significant catalogue of works from their own albums to being featured on many others that mark important moments for the South African jazz archive.
As collaborators Omagugu and Nduduzo have done important festivals such as the Winter Jazz Fest in NY, Avo Session in SW, Mam Jazz in MU and both the Joy of Jazz and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival among many others. The couple has just returned from two European tours this year. They have also had significant highlights such as a collaborative performance with the great DJ Black Coffee at the CTIJF this year, while Nduduzo has received many international awards and recently did his NPR concert.
“Nduduzo is a rare breed, his ancestral connection through music allows safe passage for his audiences – and when with the angelic Omagugu beside him, this experience is heavenly.” says Greg Maloka of GRIZA Enterprises.
