‘LIVE’ FROM O2 ARENA IN LONDON, CINEMA NOUVEAU PRESENTS THE HILARIOUS “MONTY PYTHON LIVE (mostly)” SPECIAL ON THE BIG SCREEN

Published

on

One down, five to go… some elderly gentlemen are going to entertain you!

If phrases such as “This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! If you hadn’t nailed ‘im to the perch, ‘e’d be pushing up the daisies”; “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting, but I’m afraid my walk has become rather sillier recently” and All right… all right… but apart from better sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health… what have the Romans ever done for us?”bring back memories of the irreverent weirdness and wackiness that is Monty Python, then a special show ‘live’ from London’s O2 Arena and soon to be broadcast on the big screen, is a must-see event.

Cinema Nouveau and Ster-Kinekor, in association with Picturehouse Entertainment, are delighted to announce limited screenings of the hilarious Monty Python Live (mostly) stage show, at select cinemas on 06, 09 and 16 August 2014 at 20:00. Monty Python fans around the world have the opportunity of joining one of the most anticipated live events of the year, and the chance to say farewell to the Pythons, together on stage for the first time in more than three decades, on this last and special night. The live show, featuring the inimitable talents of John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with Graham Chapman, and performances by Carol Cleveland, is directed by Aubrey Powell and produced by Fiz Oliver.

Monty Python rightfully holds a place amongst the world’s finest ever comedians, influencing a generation and revolutionising comedy on its way to greatness. At a combined age of just 357, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin have once again taken to the stage to perform some of Monty Python’s greatest hits with some modern, topical and Pythonesque twists added for good measure!

There was huge demand for tickets for this, the first live performances on stage by the stars of Monty Python since performing at the Hollywood Bowl on 15 September 1980 – and 40 years after their last stage appearance in the UK, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

“Thanks to the wonderful invention of moving pictures, The Last Night of Monty Python is coming to a cinema near you. Get your knotted handkerchiefs out and warm your brains one last time at any one of thousands of cinemas across the world. Join the crowd live from London’s O2 in a final weepy, hilarious, uproarious, outrageous, farewell to the five remaining Pythons as they head for The Old Jokes Home… on the big screen, in HD,” said the Pythons.

“At first there was some resistance to the idea of having to share each other’s tights again, but when it was explained that we were going to get paid, the deal was signed in a record 43.6 seconds. Relief turned to pure joy when medical checks proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that five of us were still alive. Even Graham (Chapman), though less alive than the rest of us, is to be reunited with us all via the miracle of digital re-creation.”

Monty Python first hit the (TV) screen with the Flying Circus, which saw 45 episodes broadcast over four BBC series between 1969 and 1974. The Pythons were an instant success and became the face of British comedy.  They went on to achieve overwhelming international acclaim with the huge success of films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail in 1975, The Life of Brian in 1979 and their final film, The Meaning of Life in 1983.

The running time of the ‘live’ show is approximately 3hrs 10mins, and includes a 20-minute interval.

Picturehouse Entertainment continues to push the boundaries of live cinema broadcasts, and the screening of Monty Python Live (mostly) is set to be one of the biggest – and certainly funniest – events of the year.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages – perfect for the youthful 50 strong cast. This time around, the show features 30 senior performers, and 21 junior performers.

The Little Mermaid Jr is directed by Daisy Spencer, with choreography by Evashnee Pillay, music direction by Des Govender, sound design by Ant Govender, set and prop design by Nicolene Steyn and fabulous under the sea inspired costumes by Kathy Singery.

The cast includes Ariel played by Chloe Marot from St. Mary’s DSG (last seen in Shrek and Annie); Sebastian is Khethukuthula Ngcobo (I.S.P.A) and Flounder is played by Azania Mavimbela (Crawford North Coast).

In a heartwarming full circle moment, Azania’s mother Sindi, a current drama teacher, reflected on her own experience as a participant in YPP’s 2009 production of Big River, directed by Themi Venturas. Her daughter Azania, who entered the project seventeen years later as a Junior performer in A Fairytale Christmas Carol, is a testament to the organization’s lasting influence. This poignant connection also highlights the profound impact of YPP’s programmes on the lives of its alumni who are giving back to their communities as arts educators.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersens’ beloved fairy tale, and based on the classic animated Disney movie, The Little Mermaid Jr tells of a mermaid who dreams of the world above the sea and gives up her voice to find true love.

Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colourful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr offers a fantastic creative opportunity for rich costumes and sets, as well as the chance to perform some of the best-known songs from the past 30 years. Songs include: “Under the Sea“; “Kiss the Girl“; and “Part of Your World“.

Written by Doug Wright, with music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater.
