Cinema Nouveau announces the exclusive screening of the next production in cinemas from the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), in collaboration with Picturehouse Entertainment. The company’s acclaimed production of the romantic comedy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, releases on Saturday, 27 September, for limited screenings at Cinema Nouveau theatres and select Ster-Kinekor cinemas countrywide.
The filmed version of the live stage production has four screenings in South Africa, on 27 September, 01 and 02 October at 19:30, and on 28 September at 14:30, at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg, Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria, Gateway in Durban and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, as well as the following select Ster-Kinekor cinemas: Somerset Mall in Somerset West, Garden Route Mall in George and Bedford Centre in Johannesburg.
Shakespeare’s comment on friendship, love, constancy and fickleness, this romantic comedy takes the audience from the controlled world of Verona and Milan to the wildness of the forest where, it seems, anything can happen…
Valentine and Proteus are best friends, until they fall in love with the same girl. Having travelled from Verona to Milan in search of adventure, they both fall for the Duke of Milan’s daughter Silvia. But Proteus is already sworn to his sweetheart, Julia, at home in Verona, and the Duke thinks Valentine is not good enough for his Silvia.
With friendship forgotten, the rivals’ affections quickly get out of hand as the four young lovers find themselves on a wild chase through the woods, confused by mistaken identity and threatened by fierce outlaws before they find a path to reconciliation.
The roles of Valentine and Proteus are played by Michael Marcus and Mark Arends respectively, with Pearl Chanda in the role of Julia. Sarah Macrae is cast as Silvia, with Jonny Glynn playing her father, the Duke of Milan. Some of the other cast members include Martin Bassindale as Speed, Valentine’s man, and Roger Morlidge as Launce, Proteus’ man, with Proteus’ father, Antonio, played by Keith Osborn.
Simon Godwin makes his RSC debut to direct Shakespeare’s exuberant romantic comedy. He is Associate Director of the Royal Court and his production of Strange Interlude recently played to critical acclaim at the National Theatre. This is the first time in 45 years that The Two Gentlemen of Verona has been performed in full production on the Royal Shakespeare Theatre stage.
The creative team assisting Godwin in the production include Paul Wills as designer, with lighting by Bruno Poet, music by Michael Bruce, Christopher Shutt in charge of sound, and movement by Jonathan Goddard.

Synopsis:
Valentine is leaving Verona to seek adventure in Milan. Proteus, his best friend, wants to remain at home because he is madly in love with Julia. However, his father sends him to join Valentine.
In Milan, Valentine has fallen for Silvia, the Duke of Milan’s daughter, and plans to elope with her. When Proteus sees Silvia, he too falls in love with her, despite his feelings for Julia. Proteus then betrays his friend to the Duke, who banishes Valentine. In the wilderness, Valentine encounters a band of outlaws and is elected their leader.
Meanwhile Julia, disguised as a man, is searching for Proteus, and overhears him declaring love to Silvia. Heartbroken, she joins his service in an attempt to thwart his new infatuation.
Silvia flees the court, pursued by Proteus, Julia and the Duke. She is captured by the outlaws but rescued by Proteus, who then tries to force himself on her. Valentine intervenes and Proteus is forced to confront his actions. Julia reveals her identity, prompting Proteus to remember his feelings for her. Reconciliation begins.
