Get the uShaka Heritage Day Vibe

Published

on

Dance to the beat of uShaka drums on the best ever Heritage Day.

Prior to naming Wednesday, September 24 Heritage Day, it was known as Shaka Day, so what better place to celebrate the colourful cultures of our Country!

There’s something for everyone with fun parades, traditional dance, music and more.

Come to arena 1 at the entrance of uShaka Marine World Village Walk where you can experience the true heart of Africa with Umlazi African Jingle (Zulu Dance), Omama Boxolo (Isigekle), Amaphephethe (Wedding Singers), Mpumalanga White Birds (Isicathamiya), Bana Ba Tsoletso (Sotho Dancers) and Umuzi Wenkosi (Tswana Dancers). There’ll be pop up shops and a craft market featuring KZN’s colourful beadwork.

In the food court arena, Lee Vaughn will celebrate our Afrikaans heritage with a lively performance followed by fun filled parades celebrating our cultural heritage and diversity throughout the park.

At the beach arena, you can catch Jisantha Productions with their Bollywood dancers and indulge in our province’s signature curries and samoosas.

Adding to the entertainment is Unico, a tropical two man band who play pipes / djemba drums that will be creating an east coast vibe in the Ticketing area outside Wet n Wild. Sip on a cocktail while listening to Afritude at Wahooz on the promenade, accompanied by the rhythm of banjos that will set the party mood while indulging in a traditional buy and braai with a Cape Carnival vibe.

Party on the wild side with DJ Spike at Wet ’n Wild and catch Lavida Loca performing live at Sea World with popular percussionist Bryan Clarke and his Caribbean Connection Steel Drum Band as they conjure up melodic calypso tunes, classic rock and even a steamy salsa.

This is truly a proudly South Africa celebration!

BUMP & GRIND at Talloula

Published

on

Durban comedy favourites Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert-McIlroy return to Talloula with their new musical comedy –  BUMP & GRIND, a high-energy musical sketch comedy that delivers a riotous mix of song, dance, quick-fire character comedy and heart. Created under the direction and choreography of Daisy Spencer, the show has already delighted audiences this festive season with its trademark MacBob mayhem and polish.

Described by Billy Suter as “a sparkly cracker of song, dance and off-the-wall humour,” BUMP & GRIND is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud theatrical experience. The show tumbles through a helter-skelter parade of characters — from fan favourites Bruce and Charmaine, as Elvis impersonators, pensioners Beatrice and Max, and super-sage Dr Veejay, to bold new creations including AI androids, Latin dance sensations and an Irish preacher with stand-up ambitions.

The music includes numbers from Talking Heads, Lady Gaga, Elvis, The Beatles, Whitney Houston and a climactic medley of ’80s chart hits.

“It’s a vibe… Aaron and Lisa’s talent and skill lie in their seemingly effortless transformations from one character to another — and making every dance hit and ballad that character’s own!” Shannon Kenny (ArtSmart)

With broad family appeal, high energy and a proven track record of sold-out runs, don’t miss BUMP & GRIND at Talloula at the end of January!

Review: Bouquet Building at See Café

Published

on

A Floral Treat in the Upper Highway

If you’re in the Upper Highway area and looking for something fresh, creative, and soul-nourishing to do, don’t miss the Bouquet Building events at See Café in Hillcrest. We recently attended one and it was absolutely delightful — the kind of morning that leaves you smiling long after the last stem is snipped.

Held twice a month, this beautifully curated experience is a must for flower lovers — or anyone in need of a little peace, beauty and joy.

For under R300 per person, all the beautiful, fresh high-quality blooms are provided (seriously, the kind you’d never find at this price in a ready-made bouquet elsewhere). You just bring yourself and your creativity! It’s a hands-on, joy-filled session where you get to design and build your own bouquet from scratch, with guidance if you need it. It’s real value for money, with a big dose of creativity and fun!

Whether you choose to gift your masterpiece to someone special or keep it as a cheerful centrepiece at home (that lasts for weeks), it’s a heartwarming and fulfilling way to spend a morning.

Even better? For a (ridiculously reasonable) extra cost, you can enjoy a delicious coffee and breakfast from See Café while you create — and trust me, the vibe is just as wonderful as the food. (Click here to see their menu) The setting is intimate and cozy, the energy is uplifting, and there’s a lovely sense of community as you chat with fellow flower lovers. Plus, they’re dog-friendly for outside seating, so your furry friend can tag along and enjoy the fresh air while you build your bouquet!

This event is definitely a must-do in Durban. It’s ideal for a solo treat, a girls’ morning out, or even a unique gift experience. Whether you’re a seasoned flower arranger or just in it for the fun, it’s well worth it!

Follow See Café on social media here to keep an eye out for the next event – you won’t want to miss it. Your bouquet (and your soul) will thank you.

Click here to watch our reel of the event and see what you can look forward to when you attend!
