Thirty teams representing some of South Africa’s top tertiary institutions will be taking advantage of the opportunity to leave their mark during this year’s annual University Sport of South Africa’s Rugby Tournament to be held at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) from 29 June – 3 July.
Varsity College Rugby Club will be taking part in the tournament. In 2014, the team advanced to semi-finals ending 4th after play-offs. In 2015 the teams have been divided into pools, with the top 2 pools being made of top 4 A division and Top 4 B division in last year’s tournament into pool A and bottom 4 A division and bottom 4 B division in last year’s tournament into pool B. Teams play quarter finals and then move into semi-final or play-off games on the Wednesday. The final game will take place at the UJ stadium on 3 July at 12h30.
Some of the participating universities include UKZN, TUKS, MATIES, NWU PUKKE and the University of Venda.
Says Malcolm Kennedy Varsity College Sports Administrator: “There is a great vibe amongst the team members and they are certainly looking forward to this year’s tournament. Playing the hosts (UJ) in the main game on day 1 is a huge ask for the boys, but they are certainly going to play their hearts out. While we are definitely the underdogs in our pool, I believe we have a team capable of causing an upset or two”.
The tournament promotes rugby and sport in general at university level and is designed to create an opportunity for students from South African universities to meet their peers from various universities and play rugby and compete at their own level.
