Durban’s annual adult pantomime has become something of a tradition. Now in its 17th year, locals and holiday-makers alike look forward to an evening of unashamed year-end adult amusement.
Take a traditional children’s story, add a healthy smattering of double entendre, a few blue jokes and a good dose of wickedly funny one-liners and you are sure to make this a grown up evening to remember.
Written and directed by Darren King, Aladdin Grey Street promises to be a bumper offering of good old fashioned belly laughs. Take Aladdin, a street urchin, and move his story to Durban. Take his poor long-suffering mother, the Widow Twanky, and put her laundry in Grey Street. Add one evil Sultana, one lonely Princess, a Genie with Sangoma powers and a laundry assistant called Watch-Mi-Wanky and you have a local production brimming with fun, nonsense and topical jokes.
With an amazing cast, headed by panto regular, Anthony Stonier (whose legs are a world heritage site) who plays Widow Twanky, the cast comprises TQ Zondi (Aladdin); Rowan Bartlett (Princess Jasmine); Darren Maule (Genie of the Lamp); Mpilo ‘Straw’ Nzimande (Genie of the Ring); Katy Moore (Evil Sultana); and Clinton Small (Watch-Mi-Wanky).
Let our Genie’s power of mirth bring a shine to your year-end function, evening out with the girls (or guys) or polish off your evening with your mates. His magical powers could even be used to bring in much needed funds for your charity or organisation. Our selection of dining options are sure to be crowd-pleasers and you’ll be pleased to note that your coffee and sweet tooth have also been taken into consideration.
Whether you are looking to let off steam with your mates, or for an end of year function for work, your friends, colleagues and clients will feel more Christmassy than turkey after a festive helping of Aladdin Grey Street.
Season is 10 November to 30 December; running Tuesdays – Saturdays @ 19h30; Saturdays @ 14h00; doors open 90 mins early for dining. The venue this year is the Centenary Room, Greyville Racecourse (enter through Gate 15 and follow the signs).
There are a wide selection of dining options / corporate packages available no matter how big or small your party. All food by Eat Greek. No self-catering allowed, but dining is not compulsory. There is a full bar service. Tickets range from R 130 to R 170 – the same prices as in 2013 and 2014!!!

I deserve to win as I went to the show last year and absolutely loved it. I would want to share the experience with my boyfriend and close family and friends. It is very seldom we are all able to do something together and this would be a great show and a fun night for us all to get together, eat, drink and be merry 🙂 Please Durbanite pick me to win so I can treat my friends and family.

I love comedy theatre going to shows and best of all love the entertainment. I could really need a night out because I lost my job three days ago. Been very sad. I really could use some cheering and excitement right now in life and this would be the perfect start. So please pick me.

My hubby and I love attending comedy shows but have never been to an adult panto, so this will be great fun and an awesome experience. My hubby was recently diagnosed with a dread disease and is on his road to recovery and this will be perfect to get his mind off his health issues. Not forgetting what huge fans we are of Darren Maule!

Hi, I am simply the biggest Aladdin fan! After watching the movie countless amounts of times, buying the little figures and dreaming of planning a stunning Arabian Night theme wedding. I would be over the moon to win an opportunity to go for this creative and tasteful performance. Please allow me the chance to see this whole new world with you.

Oh WOW Durbanite! I LOVE pantomime’s – they are always the best shows to go to!! This would be phenomenal to take my family and in-laws to see. I have only seen one and none of them have ever seen one! It would be incredible as my family have got naughty sense of humor and would most definitely enjoy watching this show…. Especially my mother-in-law!! If you want a brilliant supporting crowd, pick us! Due to family and financial issues, this would be the only time we could attend something like this before my in-laws emigrate; it would be a wonderful farewell! And the cherry on the top?? Darren Maule as the Genie!! EPIC!
