DUT Annual Fashion Show

Published

on

The Department of Fashion and Textiles at the Durban University of Technology will hold its annual Fashion Show from Wednesday, 30 September to Friday, 2 October 2015.

Themed: “INCARNATION”, this year’s fashion show will showcase the designs of 38, third-year DUT students with the best 20 ranges featured at the final showing which will be held on the last day of the fashion show (Friday, 2 October 2015).

“We explore how the word and its meaning manifests in a fashion context, both on a personal interpretation level and that of familiar fashion concepts being reinvented”, said Terence Bray, third year Design lecturer. “The theme encourages designers to self-evaluate and critically reflect on their own personal aesthetic and that of the popular choice or trend; though collections in essence should be a physical embodiment of their personality, ideals and design philosophy,” said Bray.

The word“Incarnation” is derived from the latin word incarnates, which means ‘to make flesh.’ The word can be used for anything that is being invented afresh, taking a new step, or a ‘new life’ for people. Defining “Incarnation”, Head of Department for Fashion and Textiles, Sunthra Moodley, said: “Incarnation involves miracles, mystery and the embodiment of hope”.

“The student’s inspirations were drawn from the global environment and their interpretation of the theme led them on a journey of self-discovery- to express their identity and make a social statement. The students were tasked to put together a collection of seven fully accessorized outfits that is reflective of their personal development, style and character. All the ranges are diverse, innovative and visually creative,” said Moodley.

This year’s panel of judges will include established designers from the local fashion industry. Sponsored prizes will be awarded to the best designers in the categories of Most Innovative Range, Best Range on Show, Most Commercial Range, Best Menswear Range and Best Technical Student.

Meena Bagwandin, third-year lecturer within the department, said the class of 2015 has extended itself by incorporating fabric printing and fabric manipulation to enhance their designs. “The show affords them a platform to expose their current talent by meeting and fulfilling the theme of the show. They have chosen fabrics, embellishments and accessories with a strong focus on quality, to showcase their work with a number of menswear to feature at this year’s show,” she said.
