SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge: Wartburg Kirchdorf cleans up at Umvoti

Published

Continuing their dominance in the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, Wartburg Kirchdorf, for the fourth time, cleaned up at this year’s Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional at Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg on Saturday, May 14. Pictured here captain for Wartburg Kirchdorf prepares to fire in yet another attempt during the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge at Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg on Saturday. Pic by Sophie Thompson

Led by star player Captain Elke Engelbrecht, the in-form team scored an impressive 18 goals from six games. They met Ladysmith High School in the finals after a round robin tournament.  The score was nil-nil at half time with both teams maintaining a 50% possession. After a quick change over, Wartburg’s Erin Jarvie was camped out on the left upright and with a quick reaction knocked the ball in to score the team’s first goal. Unsettled, Ladysmith attempted to fight back but were unable to get the ball back up into the Wartburg half. With just over three minutes to the final whistle, Wartburg cemented their win when Vanessa Mkhize bagged the team’s second goal resulting in their 2-nil victory.

One time regional winner Ladysmith, showed their mettle in the final, with good decisive play after having lost their round robin game 4 -1 to Wartburg earlier in the day.

“It was great to have been at Hermannsburg again for this regional, especially as they celebrate their 160 anniversary, as the oldest private school in KZN,” said Les Galloway, Tournament Director. “We were really impressed with the teams that showed great determination on the pitch, and this coupled with the anniversary market and fun activities created a truly festive event.”

“Once again this close knit community really came out in support of the local and visiting teams from afar afield as Ladysmith and Estcourt.” said Rob Philipson, MD of SPAR KZN. “We would like to congratulate the school on their 160th  and thank them for creating such a fun-filled day for all.”

The Most Promising Umpire was Walter Moore representing Ladysmith High School.

Wartburg Kirchdorf joins Sarel Cilliers from the Northern KZN Regional; St Anne’s College and Pietermaritzburg Girls High School both from the Pietermaritzburg Regionals; Durban Girls College, winners of the Durban Central Regional, Amanzimtoti representing the Durban South Regional; Ashton International from the Durban North Regional, King Edward High School from the Southern KZN Regional and winners of Highway Regional.
