Children from all walks of life will be coming together on the 16th of June – Youth Day – to participate in the biggest mini hockey festival in South Africa. Riverside Sports in Durban North will play host to this year’s Spur Riverside Festival where kids between the ages of 6 and 13 years old will be gathering with one common objective in mind – pure hockey enjoyment.
According to Derek Field, Head of Riverside Hockey Club’s Junior Division, the objective of the Spur Riverside Festival is to celebrate the youth within the KZN community through the fun and action-packed sport of hockey. “The Spur Riverside Festival has become a highlight in the clubs and local community’s sporting calendar. This year families can look forward to lots of activity both on and off the pitch with music and delicious all-day catering being provided by Apache River Spur and Riverside Sports. This is our twelfth year hosting this tournament and each year the number of entries continues to grow. It’s a great family day out and I would like to encourage parents to either enter their kids in the hockey teams or just come and enjoy a fun day outdoors, soaking up the vibe as a family. We are grateful to our long-time sponsors of the festival, Spur Steak Ranches, who with their continuous support make sure this special day is a huge success every year,” stated Field.
Clare Rainey, Head of Market Development for Spur Steak Ranches, added that Spur Steak Ranches was looking forward to being part of yet another inspiring day in partnership with Riverside Sports and Riverside Hockey Club. “This festival is a perfect fit for Spur as we understand the importance of celebrating our country’s youth, something our late and former president Madiba was a huge believer in. A festival such as this one is geared towards promoting a community-orientated and family-friendly event that is beneficial towards the growth and development of the children. We are also proud to be sponsoring the participation and catering requirements of the underprivileged INK team, so these kids can also enjoy a fun-filled day that this type of festival creates and to forge lifelong memories.”
This festival will also aptly kick-start the launch of the Kit For Kwa Mashu Kids Campaign which has been supported by Riverside Hockey Club (RHC) and its members for the past 10 years. The objective of the campaign is to appeal to RHC’s members, other hockey people, the local community and sponsors to donate old shoes, shin pads, sticks and any other equipment, which is then handed over to Inanda, Ntuzuma and Kwa Mashu (INK) Hockey Club at the end of the season for their disadvantaged players to use – each set of kit donated means another player for INK. This year, Spur will be providing the participating INK hockey team with branded gear to play in during the festival which they’ll get to keep afterwards.
