The final production of 2016 from Branagh Theatre Live is John Osborne’s powerful post-World War II play, The Entertainer. This energetic addition to the live theatre, opera and ballet productions screened at Cinema Nouveau theatres, is the last of three productions from the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company as part of its year-long Plays at the Garrick season.
This powerful production of Osborne’s modern classic, The Entertainer, releases on Saturday, 26 November at Cinema Nouveau theatres countrywide, for limited screenings.
Staged at the famous Garrick Theatre in London’s West End, and featuring some of Britain’s renowned stage actors, this ‘cinema event’ follows the two other productions from Branagh Theatre Live, William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Romeo and Juliet, both of which were screened earlier this year at Cinema Nouveau.
In The Entertainer, “…Osborne elided the ailing world of the variety hall with microcosmic slices of troubled family life, creating a portrait of a disintegrating artist and a state-of-the-nation play at the same time,” writes Dominic Cavendish, theatre critic of The Telegraph.
Set against the backdrop of post-war Britain, John Osborneʼs modern classic conjures the seedy glamour of the old music halls for an explosive examination of public masks and private torment.
Rob Ashford directs this production with Kenneth Branagh as the unforgettable Archie Rice. Also featuring in this production are Greta Scacchi as Archie’s cheated-on wife Phoebe, Gawn Grainger as his ex-showman father Billy, Jonah Hauer-King as Archie’s conscientious-objector son Frank, and Sophie McShera as his passionate and politicised daughter Jean.

Kenneth Branagh said: “Where theatre making and film making meet is exciting. The cinema broadcasts of our plays hope to challenge the possibilities of this relationship. We have a team of people who are experienced in both worlds. The potential results, particularly in exploring the magic of Shakespeare, should be fascinating.”
Marc Allenby, Director of Distribution at Picturehouse Entertainment, said: “At Picturehouse, we are huge admirers of the work of Ken and his collaborators, and it is with great pride that we look forward to bringing these exciting new productions from the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company to cinemas around the world.”
The Entertainer releases locally from Saturday, 26 November 2016, for four screenings only: on 26 and 30 November, and 01 December at 19:30 and on 27 November at 14:30 – only at Cinema Nouveau theatres in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.
