REVIEW: San Lameer Hotel Spa & Resort

Published

on

We recently sent two of our contributors for a weekend away. Read up on what Melissa Moodley and Heevan Rajakumar had to say about their Relaxed stay at San Lameer Hotel Spa & Resort.

San Lameer

We decided to embark on a mini road trip down the South Coast. The sun was shining with a slight-heat wave, making San Lameer Hotel and Spa the perfect location to spend the weekend at!

We arrived at the entrance of San Lameer estate, and were instructed by a kind security guard and given a detailed map to make our way to the hotel. Driving through the estate, we came across a well maintained golf-course, with an exciting golf tournament taking place on course. If it wasn’t the beautiful golf-course that caught your eye, then perhaps it was the magnificent admire of nature all around us. Beautiful palm trees set the scene along with a radiant colour of flowers as we drove through. San Lameer estate has made it pedestrian friendly with their clean walkways along the estate, instead of driving to and from places.

We then parked in front of hotel and walked into reception to check ourselves in.The reception staff greeted us and had everything ready for us which was fast and efficient – a good first impression on the hotel! After having all the proceedings explained, we gathered our luggage and made our way upstairs to our room.

Our room was comfortable, clean and spacious, with a big white tub right in the middle for that extra touch of relaxation. All towels were provided including the beach towels, with some welcome water and chocolates in our room. The cupboards had an endless amount of space along with some DSTV channels on a flat-screen TV in case you wanted to call it a night with some room service and stay in. For all you coffee-lovers out there, there’s also an Nespresso machine in the room, for when you needed your fix anytime of the day.

We cannot forget the exquisite view we had from our room, overlooking the main swimming pool of the hotel with the trees and not to mention the Umhlangamkulu Lagoon going towards the ocean. We had the perfect view to watch a sunset or sunrise – it definitely felt like a tropical paradise!

So our full day started off with an exquisite buffet breakfast ranging from bacon, eggs to pancakes and waffles – you pick your feast! Either way it was all around delicious. We then embarked on a walk around of the resort, where we came across so much. We got to see families relaxing by the pools as their kids, played on the slides and with the sprinklers.

You can also go paddling in the lagoon by the hotel to be little more adventurous, or enjoy a nice simple must-have cocktail at the bar by the pool. We also got to see a little wedding photo-session take place making this hotel the ideal venue for weddings.

Not going to the beach while you in the South Coast is a no-no which we had to do. San Lameer Hotel definitely made it easier for us with it being just at our doorstep. All hotel residents have private beach access to Marina Beach, with on-alert security at the privately-accessed gate. A little stroll on the white sand, laying your towel down with the umbrella up with the crashing waves in front of you, now that’s a tropical, chilled-vibes feel right there. Watch out for those little blue bottles though, they give quite a sting.

With the weather changing with some rain expected we decided to head back to the hotel and just in time for supper. We made our way to the Lagoon Restaurant where a pleasant waiter escorted us to our table where we could order our meals. It was a full house making the atmosphere chilled and relaxed with some laughable kiddies in the background. It’s definitely a great way for the family to come together at the end of a fun day. Our tasty food definitely filled our bellies up, with such large portions. Obviously dessert is a must-have, which definitely completed the night. With a full day of exploring, beaching and filling up with food here and there, it was time to make our way back to our room, for an early nights rest as we were departing in the morning.

As the morning approached, it was time to leave the tropics and head back to reality. Not without that perfect insta-shot with the San Lameer memory photo-frame, which was a kiddies favourite I may say.

If you’re looking for that chilled, relaxed family getaway, San Lameer Hotel and Spa is definitely the place to go. It has a hint of that Indonesian beauty coupled with luxury and tranquility. They have a wide range of facilities and activities on the estate to keep you occupied, not forgetting the award winning Camelot Spa.

It’s also an amazing place if you looking at having that tropical beach wedding too. Not to mention if you are a golf-lover then the 18-hole championship golf course is your best friend which has recently hosted the SA Womens Open.

Nestled in the heart of Kamberg Valley in the Drakensberg, Qambathi Mountain Lodge is a hidden gem designed exclusively for couples seeking a tranquil retreat. As Durbanites, we had the pleasure of spending a rejuvenating weekend at this stunning mountain lodge, and it truly exceeded all expectations.

From the moment we arrived, we were treated to exceptional hospitality. The gracious hostess welcomed us with a glass of champagne at their stylish yet homely bar. As we walked through the entrance, we were led through a glass passageway that opened up into a beautifully designed lounge. The decor seamlessly blends modern elegance with a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Intricately designed chancellor beads enhance the ambiance, while the lodge’s wine cellar offers guests the opportunity to indulge in wine and gin tastings.

The Greenhouse Suite: A Luxurious Stay

Qambathi Mountain Lodge features only five exclusive suites, which get booked up quickly due to high demand. Our bags were promptly taken to our suite—the Greenhouse Suite—which boasts a sleek, modern aesthetic with high-end finishes. Each room is thoughtfully equipped with a Nespresso machine, offering a delightful selection of coffee and tea. One of the standout features of the suite was the locally crafted artwork showcasing the wild animals that roam the property. Stepping out onto our private sitting area, we were greeted with a breathtaking view of zebras, horses, and donkeys peacefully grazing.

Activities & Experiences
Qambathi Mountain Lodge offers a variety of unique experiences designed to enhance your stay. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, there is something for everyone. One of the lodge’s most highly recommended activities is horseback riding, an experience that allows guests to take in the stunning scenery in an intimate and unique way. Additionally, we embarked on a 5km hiking trail within the property, which led us through a picturesque waterfall and stream, offering mesmerizing views of the Drakensberg mountains. Guests can also enjoy trout fishing in the nearby streams, indulge in a romantic picnic set up by the lodge, or participate in a rejuvenating yoga session amidst nature.

A Culinary Delight
Qambathi Mountain Lodge takes pride in its exquisite dining experience, offering a daily changing five-course menu prepared by a specialized chef. Our dinner was a gastronomic journey, starting with a mini feta pizza, followed by a creamy butternut soup, and culminating in a delectable lamb dish served with fragrant rice. Each course was beautifully presented, with locally sourced ingredients adding to the rich flavors. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the malva pudding, accompanied by homemade ice cream—a dessert not to be missed.

The morning after, we indulged in a delightful homemade breakfast buffet. From fresh oats, muesli, and yogurt to warm, flaky scones with cream, every bite was a treat. For those who prefer a heartier meal, the lodge also offers hot breakfast options such as eggs Benedict and a traditional farmhouse breakfast.

Unparalleled Service & Special Touches
The staff at Qambathi go above and beyond to ensure guests feel at home. They regularly checked in with us, ensuring our needs were met, whether it was arranging additional experiences or providing in-room comforts. The nightly turndown service was a lovely touch, adding to the overall sense of luxury.

A Celebrity Retreat
Adding to its prestige, Qambathi Mountain Lodge has even hosted Hollywood royalty—Tom Cruise himself stayed here for several months while filming the latest Mission Impossible installment, set to release in 2025. It’s easy to see why, as the lodge offers a stunning deck area perfect for unwinding with sundowners by the pool, accompanied by delightful chef-prepared snacks.

Relax & Rejuvenate
For couples seeking ultimate relaxation, the lodge also offers a serene spa where guests can indulge in a rejuvenating couples’ massage. The tranquil surroundings only enhance the experience, making it a must-do during your stay.

Final Thoughts
Qambathi Mountain Lodge offers an exclusive retreat with only five suites, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience. Despite its limited number of suites, the lodge can accommodate up to 10 guests, making it perfect for small gatherings. Owners Nadia and Stephen have curated an exceptional retreat that truly feels like a home away from home. Whether you’re looking to explore the surrounding beauty of the Drakensberg or simply unwind in luxury, Qambathi Mountain Lodge offers an unforgettable experience. With its perfect blend of natural beauty, top-tier hospitality, and fine dining, we highly recommend this sanctuary to couples seeking a romantic and rejuvenating getaway.
