SPLASHY FEN 2020 Festival Line-up

Published

on

It’s hard to believe – but things have just gotten hotter in Durban, as Splashy Fen Music Festival announces their 2020 Main Stage line-up. And it’s a goodie! Obviously.

Festival organisers Impi Concept Events hosted an intimate gathering for ticket holders and sponsors at the Kingston Beach Club in Durban for their exclusive launch party; an annual event where the Splashy Fen Main Stage line-up was announced. Streaming live to the festival’s social media channels, the team revealed the first 14 acts – consisting of both international and local musicians – who will take to the Splashy Fen Main Stage across the 4-day music festival.

With less than 2 months to go until the 31st edition of South Africa’s friendliest festival, you can be sure that the Splashy Fen farm is already a hub of activity as organisers prepare for another fun-filled experience for fans of all ages. And of course, there is music for every taste too.

“We spend months and months considering the right direction for our musical line-ups,” says Stu Berry, Festival Director. “So it’s always a big deal when it comes time to make the announcement to our fans. Last year, 5 000 Splashy Fenners completed an event survey, in which 92% of people questioned, indicated that their attendance at Splashy Fen was NOT due to the headliner acts, but rather that they trust the Splashy brand to always bring good music, and the nature of the stage performance was much more important to them than a band with top-charting hits.”

“So this year, we have focused our energy and line-up curation on musical acts that will connect with our fans through not just their talent, but through their energy and emotion too. Acts like the critically acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir, Mi Casa and Goodluck are just some of our South African artists who tick all the boxes. And we’ve got a handful of international acts too, who we are confident will leave a lasting impression.”

MAIN STAGE
Multi-platinum artist Coleman Hell will be the first international act to hit the Splashy Fen Main Stage on Friday the 9th of April, along with Mali Zulu, Josh Wantie, The Steezies and South African dance favourites Goodluck.

Bad Peter will open the show on Saturday afternoon, followed by American artist Shakey Graves, the acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir, musical showstopper The Jagermeister Brass Cartel and one of those most high-energy acts in South Africa; Mi Casa.

Back by very popular demand, Australian Duo The Pierce Brothers will be blowing up the Splashy Fen Main Stage on Sunday evening, along with England’s Frank Turner and South Africa’s very own Rubber DUC and Desmond and the Tutus.

INTERNATIONAL HEADLINER ARTISTS
SHAKEY GRAVES – His family know his as Alejandro Rose-Garcia, but to the rest of the world, he is the talented, artistic and indie-inspired Shakey Graves. He has been categorised as an Americana singer/songwriter, thanks to his traditionally rooted songs, fluent acoustic-guitar picking, Texas roots and his trusty cowboy hat. He was named Best Emerging Artist at the 2015 Americana Awards, and finally, he will be gracing the Splashy Fen Main Stage as one of the festival’s few international acts.

FRANK TURNER – He may be an English punk and folk singer-songwriter, but it is Turner’s artistic ability to tell stories through his music that makes him an act not to be missed at this year’s Splashy Fen Music Festival. All of Turner’s eight studio albums mix and match his raw musical talent with a spirit of storytelling that creates a vibe much like the title of his first solo EP: Campfire Punkrock.

COLEMAN HELL – The multi-platinum, Juno Award nominated singer, songwriter and producer Coleman Hell is headed for the rolling foothills of Underberg, all the way from Canada… and there is no doubt that fans will go wild when he takes to the Main Stage to perform breakthrough hits like “2 Heads” and “Fireproof”. His debut album, Summerland, achieved gold status in his native Canada and spawned two multi-platinum singles (mentioned above), as well as a host of additional accolades.

THE PIERCE BROTHERS – If you were one of the lucky ones who got to see Australian duo The Pierce Brothers blow up the Splashy Fen Main Stage in 2018… and if you haven’t already booked your #splashy2020 ticket – we bet you will now! From their early days of street busking in Melbourne, to their inaugural and unforgettable performance at Splashy Fen in 2018, followed by a host of festival headlines and world tours… the Pierce Brothers are back! Need we say more.

The multi-instrumentalist twin brothers have been shaking dance floors with their irresistible energy and world-class live stage performances, bringing a collection of folksy blues to fans across the globe. Splashy Fen is ready for their high energy and cannot wait for what is bound to be a firm favourite.

Field Notes (an exhibition)
Presented by Contemporary Archive Project
Opening: 1 November 2024 at 6 PM
Venue: The Chairman, Durban.

In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, stories are marked like pins scattered across a map. These pins cluster in the city of eThekwini or are more sparsely spread through the landscapes of Nquthu, Tugela, and Amaotana. By mapping out and noting where the photographs were made, the explorers’ tracks reveal a wide, eclectic range of stories, each reflecting individual narratives. In these collections, the photographers are the explorers of their own stories, presenting clips and field notes that present an Insider’s view.

Subverting old tropes of Outsiders looking in, disconnected from a culture or space, the photographs that make this exhibition present intimate representations of faith and religion, culture and rituals, life and death, solitude and community. The collective way of seeing a city and space are all informed by each photographer’s way of seeing.
In this gathering, we present moments from each photographer’s archive. Guided by the visual connections of the photographs, the exhibition’s content invites you to reflect on the themes of fragility, power, togetherness, and the significance of the spaces we call home.

The group exhibition features work from CAP’s archive, inclusive of:
Andile Ndunge, Andre Swart, Mandisa Buthelezi, Myllo Menorah, Niamh Walsh-Vorster, Paulo Menezes, Robyn Perros, Seraz Abrahams, Sibusiso Gcaba, and Thobani Khumalo.
This exhibition is made possible by the National Lotteries Commission.

REVIEW: Sunsets & Mermaids, Umhlanga

Unwind with Great Food and Vibes at Sunsets and Mermaids

Sunsets and Mermaids Restaurant and Bar in Umhlanga, Durban, is an experience you won’t want to miss. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a complimentary serving of olives stuffed with feta, a delightful mini starter that set the tone for what was to come.

We began with their unique sushi, featuring a delectable combination of prawn and salmon, paired with chicken dumplings that came with a choice of sauces. The hot sauce packed a punch, while the mild sauce offered a gentle, flavorful alternative—both enhanced the dishes perfectly. We paired our meal with expertly crafted cocktails: an Old Fashioned and a Margarita, each complementing the flavors of our food beautifully.

For lunch, we opted for their chicken and beef burgers, each topped with a homemade sauce that added a unique twist. The crispy onion rings and Lay-like chips were a perfect accompaniment, making for a satisfying and delicious meal.

What really stood out was the impeccable service. Not only were the staff attentive and friendly, but the chef personally came to our table to check if the food was to our liking and even offered some great recommendations. The atmosphere was electric, with the upbeat Durban music vibes adding to the overall experience.

Sunset and Mermaids is more than just a bar; it’s a culinary destination with a diverse menu that spans sushi, burgers, and even pizzas. Their Tuesday quiz nights and Wednesday Ladies Night add an extra layer of fun to the week. The place is such a vibe that even the Irish Rugby team made an appearance after their game against the Springboks!

We’re already planning our next visit and highly recommend that you give it a try too.
Sunsets and Mermaids is a must-visit spot in Umhlanga!
