Stream Mapimpi Documentary on DSTV & Showmax Pro

Published

on

On Sunday, 27 March 2022, DSTV & Showmax Pro viewers could watch and stream Mapimpi Documentary the extraordinary story of the Springboks wingman Makazole Mapimpi, courtesy of SuperSport. From playing rugby with plastic balls as a child to becoming the first South African to score a try in a Rugby World Cup Final, Mapimpi embodies the phrase, “Despise not the days of small beginnings”.

Mapimpi’s outstanding performance won the hearts and minds of South Africans who witnessed the difficult challenges he overcame to excel and be the best in the game. Narrated by award-winning sport journalist Sibusiso Mjekeliso, the documentary provides the audience with an in-depth, intimate and visually dynamic exploration of culture, difficulties and the rawness of talent in South Africa.

According to director Bongani Morgan, “Map1mp1 is a hero’s journey like no other, considering the trials and tribulations Makazole had to tackle”.

Before finding global fame, the wingman played for Southern Kings, Free State Cheetahs and the Sharks. As a latecomer to international rugby, Mapimpi made his debut against Wales in 2018 at the age of 27 in Washington DC in 2018. He has scored 20 tries in 25 games; he was the fastest Springbok to achieve this. Mapimpi has remained consistent, scoring against every country he has played against.

The documentary is an exploratory story of how a single moment at the Rugby World Cup had the potential to motivate a generation of boys and girls in South Africa. Predictably, it is a complex and refined story that is given due care by the creators of the film.

Showmax Pro & DSTV subscribers can stream Mapimpi documentary, courtesy of SuperSport.

Two Sides Documentary Premieres on 15 May 2022

Published

on

SuperSport and M-Net will be rolling out the first of several locally-made sport documentaries on 15 May 2022.

Following the recent success of “Chasing the Sun”, the World of Champions has another major rugby documentary in production.

A three-part series to be broadcast on DStv, “Two Sides” tells the story of the tour by The British & Irish Lions that was punctuated by drama, struggle and triumph. What makes it unique is that it will be a film told through the eyes of both protagonists.

In a first of its kind co-production between producers of “Chasing the Sun” and broadcast producers Whisper. This docu-series also featured the environments some of the players emerged from with footage of friends and families of Maro Itoje, Pieter Steph Du Toit, Liam Williams and others adding to the extraordinary narrative.

The film takes in numerous events, including the drama of the tour’s status in the build-up, the Covid outbreaks in both camps, the impact of civil unrest and the tension of the down-to-the-wire finish.

“The film is a heartfelt celebration of the game’s longest-standing Test tour and the brotherhood that comes along with it,” said Marc Jury, chief executive of SuperSport.

“In the midst of unprecedented challenges and hardship, it is a reminder of the values of the game we love so dearly. The film is a story of sacrifice, courage and a belief in the power of sport.”

Later in 2022, SuperSport will lift the lid on “Rassie”, which for the first time tells the full – and astonishing – story of Rassie Erasmus’ rise from the backwaters of the Eastern Cape to the top of the rugby world.

BROADCAST DETAILS

The first episode of “Two Sides” will be broadcast on DStv on May 15 (M-Net, 6pm; SuperSport 7pm).

The remaining episodes will broadcast on May 22 and 29.

TWO SIDES – THE STORY

Two Sides is a first-of-its kind documentary, telling the compelling story of a rivalry that goes back over a century.

The Springboks and The British & Irish Lions meet once every twelve years, which only adds to the weight of expectation for this latest instalment, in 2021. But this series almost didn’t happen, because of a global pandemic that changed the way the world lives and works – and also changed the way sport happens.

Through collective will from both sides, this tour endured health protocols, empty stands, civil unrest and a controversy that rocked the very foundations of World Rugby.

Along the way, Two Sides emphasises the importance of keeping sporting traditions alive, because they matter to players, coaches and their families. And the fans who find a way to be a part of each collision.

With unprecedented access to both teams, their families and their change-room in the midst of an unforgettable series, Two Sides is a story of considerable sacrifice, a tale of redemption and glory, and the unflinching will that keeps the things that matter going, even when everything says they shouldn’t.

Two Sides is a story of courage from two teams building on the proud legacy left by those who came before them. Two Sides is a story of hope.

SPLASHY FEN MUSIC FESTIVAL IS READY FOR YOU

Published

on

Splashy Fen has 4 unique stage areas, over 150 local musicians, yoga, trail running, drumming, belly dancing, and didgeridoo classes, campsite flag competitions, a local SA day, a creative craft market, and inviting food court, silent disco, pop-up parties, dedicated kid-zone, art in the forest, cocktail viewing deck, Easter egg hunt, Sunday Easter service and so much more… not to mention fresh open air, star-speckled campfires, and glorious mountain views… all surrounded by a bunch of like-minded people who are grateful to be back on the Splashy Fen Farm after two years of being away.

The countdown to Splashy Fen is finally over!

This time next week, festival-goers will be lapping up the fresh mountain air as they embark on a 4-day sensorial experience at the 31st edition of the Splashy Fen Music Festival. Local duo Liam and Jane Magner of Veranda Panda are two such fans, who have been eagerly awaiting their return to Splashy Fen.

Veranda Panda

“Splashy Fen is a part of who we are now,” says Liam. It’s a kind of annual pilgrimage that helps us to reset, re-think and centre ourselves. Personally, my first Splashy Fen was an incredible experience. I remember being struck by the sense of freedom, kindness, and community. In recent years the festival has really managed to rekindle that spirit.“

When asked, as artists, how the pair coped through the early Covid months, they too were shaken to their core but have used the experience to adapt and find positivity in their challenges. “The whole experience has been horribly divisive and has definitely left the world with a hangover of mistrust and fear. We suffered financially in the first year as we lost every single performance job over the space of two weeks. We are grateful to have had other revenue streams, but it took us a while to adapt. However, we have changed for the better. Living through chaos, and coming out the other side, has helped us see things more clearly.”

Fans can catch this electrifying Durban act and listen the some of the great new music they have been creating, at 20h30 on Friday night at the Corona Splashy Fen Main Stage. Other acts to catch on Friday night in the impressive dome marquee include Mali Zulu, 4 AM, Steve Umcolo, a heart-warming Johnny Clegg Tribute, and Mango Groove.

“We cannot wait to see Good Luck, Mango Groove, and Sean Koch this year,” says Magner. “But also, hanging out, laughing, relaxing, and meeting people is the part that we love the most. We have always been a fan of the energy between people there. Something magical happens under those mountains and for a few days, people are good to each other. We can’t wait.

Fans can take advantage of Splashy Fen’s brand new App. Log on and see who is performing when and where, find your friends, and build your own festival experience with reminders, updates, live tracking, and interactive community chats. The App is FREE to download here or visit http://woov.to/splashyfen

South Africa’s longest-running music festival will take place over the traditional Easter weekend from next Thursday the 14th of April to Monday the 18th of April 2022, and tickets are still available online or at the gate.

Candy Cane Lane Holiday Light Drive-Through – A First for Durban

Published

on

By

Admittedly the usual festive cheer that takes hold of Durbanites and visitors around December, has been a bit wanting over the past two years, with the covid pandemic scuppering the holiday plans for many.

The team that brings you KZN’s largest holiday light show got thinking about a complementary experience that would cater to the many that would not be able to enjoy a walk in event due to capacity restrictions, being aged, vulnerable or immuno-compromised.  To help, they called on Durban’s ‘king  of lighting’ Nevon Singh from Magic Lighting and between them they hatched a plan, that promises to bring joy to young and old alike.

“Reminiscent of days of yester-year many Durbanites have fond memories of viewing holiday lights from their cars, driving though the main streets of Durban,” says Nevon Singh. “We’ve designed Candy Cane Lane to evoke those same feelings of awe and wonder. It’s an immersive drive-through lighting experience, that’s been designed to transport  visitors into a festive wonderland of lights, festive characters and selfie opportunities, all in the comfort of your own vehicle.”

“This is a first for Durban and we’re thrilled that The Pavilion Shopping Centre could bring this event to local audiences this year,” says Julie-Anne Zuma, Marketing Manager for The Pavilion.  “Similar events around the country have sold out soon after bookings opened and we’re expecting a similar reaction.  We encourage early booking to avoid disappointment.”

Candy Cane Lane will feature just under a kilometre of lights and activations, as well as KZN’s tallest and brightest Christmas tree, standing at almost 10m tall.

The Candy Cane Lane Holiday Light Drive Through Experience is being held on the rooftop (Parking D & E) of The Pavilion Shopping Centre from 8 December 2021 – 2 January 2022  (closed on Christmas Day) from 18h30 – 21h30 each night.  A fully contactless experience a number of covid protocols have been implemented to make the encounter comfortable and safe at the same time. These include, timed slot entries to prevent overcrowding or traffic jams; the scanning of tickets through the vehicle’s window and sanitising stations at key points along the route.

Tickets are R199 per vehicle and are available online on http://www.howler.co.za/candycane2021.

Due to traffic and space limitations, limited tickets will be sold at the gate each night, but entry is not guaranteed without pre-booked tickets#CANDYCANELANESA
