Ziggy Alberts announces his debut South African tour as he heads to Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town this October

Published

on

Ziggy Alberts’ first ever South African visit will anticipate the release of his forthcoming sixth studio album, DANCING IN THE DARK, out 04 November 2022.

Musically, Ziggy’s sound has raised comparisons to the likes of early Ben Howard or Jack Johnson. His sound is laid back, soulful and folk-tinged, and his songwriting is honest and personal. Whilst Ziggy Alberts is similar to his contemporaries in writing about his personal experiences, his music is layered with subtextual references to issues close to his heart, such as the natural world, the human experience and the wider planet.

DANCING IN THE DARK has been driven by real-time releases, including the singles I BELIEVE, TATTOOS, THE GREAT DIVIDE and most recently, THE SUN & THE SEA featuring Donovan Woods, which all find their home on the album. The new record sits in a genre – self-titled by Ziggy – as “Future Folk”. In his own words, “the album is a blend of the honest and raw, with the smoothness and touch of synthesised soundscapes, intentional tuning and programmed organic samples… that reflects accurately the range of experiences we are having as humans in our current world.” Matched with Ziggy’s storytelling and sincere songwriting, DANCING IN THE DARK shows yet another step in Alberts’ growth as an artist, his music and personal explorations, both introspectively and in the natural world.

Founder of his independent label, Commonfolk Records, and book publishing house, Commonfolk Publishing, Ziggy Alberts has managed to craft what many musicians and authors dream of – the ability to tell a story on their own terms. In 2022, Ziggy was awarded an APRA for his track letting go. He has also earned ARIA Platinum certifications for Laps Around The Sun (Double Platinum), Gone, Runaway, Heaven, Love Me Now, Stronger and Four Feet in the Forest (EP), plus Gold certifications for his Laps Around The Sun album and six tracks in his catalogue.

on

February is the month of love and the I heart Market will celebrate with its traditional bi-annual “sale” market on Saturday 3 February from 9am to 2pm at  Northlands Primary School, in Durban North.

Following two busy and packed festive season markets in its new home at Northlands Primary School, which was well received by customers, February’s I heart Market will offer a range of discounted products.

“We were over the moon with the turn for our first markets at Northlands Primary, with a steady stream of customers, and great sales for our traders who are all small business entrepreneurs,” enthuses Manager of the Market, Tanith Molliere. “Our February market is kind of the “January Sales” market with great offers to help those budgets that may have been stretched during the holidays.”

February’s Market promises a magical shopping experience with wares created with love and care by local artisans and small businesses, reflecting a deep commitment to their artistry and craft.  With Valentine’s Day just around the corner – there will also be a gorgeous array of “romantically-inspired” products available.

As always, the market is filled with handmade treasures ranging from fine leather goods, unusual ceramics, exquisite jewellery and accessories, innovative visual art, home decor, plants, clothing, condiments and pickles, cured meats, a delightful selection of delicious baked goods. Of course, the usual mouth-watering array of food truck eats, catering to every palate including vegan and vegetarian.

There is also a secure play area for children between the ages of 1 and 6, with qualified Teacher’s Assistants in attendance available for the morning for those parents who want to take a break to shop or enjoy some delicious food. There is a fee of R100 for the morning or part thereof. A “pram park” is also available for people to leave their prams whilst shopping to help avoid congestion in the hall.

The market is housed in the school hall and surrounding gardens from 9am to 2pm, and takes place rain or shine as most of the traders are under cover.  Parking is available in designated school areas, with security guards to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Julie Andrews – Uncut

Published

on

Julie Andrews – Uncut: An acclaimed one-woman production from East London which celebrates the phenomenal life, career and music of much adored timeless icon of stage and screen, Dame Julie Andrews, comes to the Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban for one weekend only – from 9 until 11 December.

Julie Andrews is an English actress, singer, and author, who has been honoured with a host of accolades and awards throughout her career spanning over seven decades, acknowledging her enormous body of work. She is also dubbed Britain’s “youngest prima donna”, as a 13-year-old Andrews became the youngest solo performer ever to be seen in a Royal Variety Performance on 1 November 1948 – the annual fund-raising gala event attended by senior members of the Royal Family.

She is known and loved for her enduring feature films – Mary PoppinsThe Sound of MusicVictor / Victoria and more recently The Princess Diaries. As a voice artist, her distinctive voice appeared in ShrekDespicable Me and Bridgerton.

She is widely known as a composed, elegant, well-spoken and a typical English lady. A lady and a dame (In 2000, Andrews was made a dame by the late Queen Elizabeth for her services to the performing arts). But not born of noble blood. Julie Andrews is a self-made woman. She spent her childhood performing on the Vaudeville circuit, singing and dancing, two shows a day, six days a week, alongside Pops and Barbara Andrews. Little Julie would stand on a crate to sing a duet with Pops while mom Barbara accompanied them on piano.  All was not well in the Andrews family. Pops’ drinking was out of control. He was a violent drunk, completely unemployable. So the Julie became the sole provider for the bickering Andrews clan.

Vaudeville was her training ground, Broadway made her and Hollywood immortalised her.  Julie Andrews – Uncut tells the of the rials and tribulations that shaped Julie Andrews into a shining star.

Julie Andrews Uncut features Alison Hillstead, and is written and directed by Amanda Bothma with musical director and pianist:  Nathan Johannisen.  The production is the latest offering from Wela Kapela – an East London-based production company, established in 2019 to create opportunities for performers from East London, creating fresh new work to encourage new audiences. To this end, at least one of their productions annually is targeted at a younger audience.  “Wela Kapela” is a colloquial phrase often used by young people in Cape Town, to tease or to boast.
