TRAIL OF LIGHTS TURNS 10 – Durban’s Favourite Festive

Durban’s longest-running festive light show returns to the historic Durban Botanic Gardens from 9 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, marking a decade of wonder with an entirely new chapter.

For 10 festive seasons, the Trail of Lights has transformed the Durban Botanic Gardens, one of the oldest surviving botanic gardens in Africa and the world, into a shimmering wonderland that has become synonymous with Christmas in the country’s most popular seaside city.

Since the very first show a decade ago, the event has grown into KwaZulu-Natal’s (KZN) must-see festive attraction, drawing visitors from across South Africa who plan their December in Durban around it.

This year, the Trail of Lights celebrates its 10th anniversary under the theme “10 Years of Wonder”, and rather than simply looking back, organisers are using the milestone to launch what they’re calling the event’s next chapter: “Discover a New World.”

“Ten years ago we set out to give Durban families a festive tradition of their own,” says founder and organiser Alene Naidoo. “A decade on, we’re not just celebrating what we’ve built – we’re stepping into a completely new era. This isn’t an anniversary edition, with a few new additions. It’s a brand-new show, from the ground up, with lights and features never before seen in Durban or anywhere else on the continent.”

A Decade of Memories, A Brand-New World to Discover

Over the past 10 years, the event has welcomed generations of families through the 80-year-old Botanic Gardens’ gates, creating festive memories that have become a Durban tradition in their own right. As the show enters its second decade, 2026 marks a complete reinvention of the experience.

Visitors to the 10th anniversary edition will discover an entirely new, highly interactive world, including:

  • The Tree of Wonder – a spectacular new interpretation of the iconic Christmas Tree
  •  Immersive, themed attractions, brand new to the Trail
  • Plus, so much more…

Set against the backdrop of the historic Botanic Gardens, this year’s displays promise a scale and level of interactivity that pushes the Trail of Lights beyond a light show and into a full sensory experience for the whole family.

Familiar Favourites Return

True to its roots, the Trail of Lights also brings back the attractions that have made it a December institution for families across the province:

  • Two Food Gardens – serving festive staples and gourmet treats
  • Live Entertainment – setting the festive mood every evening
  • Santa’s Grotto – a chance to meet the big man himself

A Durban Tradition, Reimagined

As South Africa’s longest-running festive light show, the Trail of Lights has firmly established itself as more than a display of lights – it is a Durban festive tradition, a family ritual, and a story that continues to grow with every passing year. With its 10th anniversary, organisers are inviting past visitors and newcomers alike to be part of the moment the Trail of Lights steps into its next decade.

“Whether you’ve walked the Trail every December for the past ten years, or you’re discovering it for the very first time, 2026 is the year to be there,” Naidoo added. “This is the beginning of a new world of wonder.”
