The Good Food & Wine Show will be in Durban at the end of the month and we are giving away 3 x double (standard entry) tickets to 3 lucky Durbanites!! To enter leave a comment at the end of this post telling us which you love more, FOOD or WINE and why… *Std. T&Cs apply

Joao Fonseca  – best known to most of his fans as J’Something – is better recognised for his catchy tunes and hypotonic moves as the lead singer of award-winning South African band Mi Casa.  However, visitors to the GFWS will be able to catch J’Something cooking up a storm in both the Celebrity Chefs Theatre (Friday, October 30 at 12.50) and the well.i.am kitchen (Saturday, October 31 at 12.20). He will also be doing a Q&A session at the SABC3 stand at the show on the Friday at 15.00.

In early October 2014, word of a J’Something cooking show made the rounds and the ‘aspiring chef’ and his team soon announced a much-anticipated  Something’s Cooking TV series. The 13-episode season proved to be a resounding success reaching over two million viewers.   Since  the  launch  of  J’s cooking  show  his  brand  has  grown  leaps  and  bounds and he recently hosted  another cooking show, called What’s For Dinner, on SABC 3 that reached more than 10 million viewers.  J’s food philosophy is simple: “It’s not necessarily about the cost, the complexity or the look but what’s in your heart when you are making the dish,” he says.

He  has  also  become  very  involved  with  his  own  nutrition  and  has  learnt  to  find  a  balance between good food and good health; his goal is to make food that is delicious yet healthy. So what will this muso/chef be cooking at the show in Durban?
“It’s a surprise,” he says, “but trust me it will be delicious and simple.  It will be down to earth and – more than anything else – my demo will be the most fun out of all of them.”

J ‘Something will be joined by a host of international chefs, including Rick Stein, Brent Owens, Reza Mahammed and Renae Smith, as well as some of the best local chefs including Jenny Morris, Asha Maharaj, Executive Chef of Hartford House, Constantijn Hahndiek,  Durban Curry author Erica Platter, Executive Chef of The Oyster Box Hotel Kevin Joseph, Head Chef of the Sun Coast Towers Hotel, Sandren Govender, Sheila Somers, and Peter Ayub.

The Durban Good Food & Wine Show takes place from October 30 to November 1 at the Durban Exhibition Centre in association with Durban Tourism. There will be book signings with all the celebrity chefs at the show, along with Q&As and the Big Durban Curry Cook-Off.

    Food ❤
There Is Nothing In This Entire World That Can Brighten Up My Day As Much As Food Can! It’s So Vast And Diverse, The Different Flavours And Textures Are Just Absolutely Amazing, We Have Definitely Come A Long Way From The Hunters And Gatherers That Once Roamed The Earth Eating Raw Meat And Plants. It Is Truly A Wonder As To How One Can Create Something That Looks So Good And Tastes Even Better. I Am Not One Of Those People But There Is Nothing I Enjoy More Than Tasting The Beautiful Creations. I Would Love To Win This And I Think My Parents And Grandparents Would Love Share This With Me As It Will Be Our First Good Food And Wine Experience, And After The Wine I’m Pretty Sure That I Will Be Driving Home! ?

It is nearly an impossibility to choose between food or wine. We need food for a sustainable living but what better why to enjoy your food than with a glass of wine. It just brings the flavour of the food through. The two just compliment each other. Therefore for myself, there is no differentiation between the two.

Canadian duo Neon Dreams are no strangers to the South African music scene. Their 2019 single “Life Without Fantasies” reached the top of the South African viral charts amassing millions of streams in 2021 during the lockdown. The band connected with tens of thousands of fans online which led to their first sold out headline tour. They have continued to cement themselves in the industry here, having toured the country a number of times over the past few years and return in February 2024 to share the stage with Milky Chance in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

Sean Koch is one of SA’s most-loved indie-folk artists who brings a mixed bag of African and western, influence alongside messages of home, a connection to nature, the ocean and the people around him; to his storytelling, feel-good music. While rooted in his flowing-folk style, his music is diverse. From dance infused songs like ‘Lift You Up’ the standout single from his collection (including the Double MZK & G DOM remix) to the dreamier songs like ‘Feel the Energy’ that carry deeper messages of connection to the natural world and the people that surround us.
