Carlton Hair does its magic again!

Published

on

This time around, we sent Bronwynn Fineman to try out the new Carlton Hair in La Lucia Mall. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

“I was the lucky one to be the first to go to the new salon in La Lucia Mall. I have to say that I was a little nervous but really excited having never been to a ‘professional salon’ before!

I have to say that my first impression was that it was friendly, very busy and of course, ‘vibey.’ There was so much going on but it was fun, new and co-ordinated. I can’t describe exactly how I was feeling at the time, taking in everything, it was surreal.

I was offered drinks and given magazines to read, which made me feel welcome and comfortable. I then finally got to meet Kim Franklin. What a lovely young woman! We talked about what we were going to do with my hair.  – That part is always a little scary for me as I have very difficult hair to manage. Finding someone who knows what they doing is always challenging, but Kim made me feel comfortable with her knowledge of hair and colour, and so I was happy to let her do her thing! First she started with the colour, all the while chatting like we were old friends. I learnt so much about her and what an interesting person she is. I also found out that she is currently the resident trainer for the in-house training school that Carlton run. WOW…. How lucky was I?

After the colour came the wash! I was taken to the lovely wash area where they proceeded to treat me to the most relaxing head and neck massage ending with a hot towel around my shoulders. By the end of all that, my hair was miraculously clean!

Following this was an amazing treatment and then THE CUT. We had discussed it and I have expressed wanting to go shorter, but was a little worried about how short and if my hair would co-operate. Kim was wonderful at explaining how to maintain it and insisted that I come in after my first wash and if I was still worried, she would ‘train’ me to style it. I haven’t been back yet, but I am going to take her up on her offer!

All the time fresh tea kept arriving and the conversation kept flowing. I have to say that it was the most amazing experience I have had in a long while. Given that I don’t generally attend hairdressers. It’s safe to say that I’ve found THE hairdresser to call “home!”

I want to thank Kim and all her staff for treating me so well. And then to Durbanite, for including me in this opportunity.”

Review: Bouquet Building at See Café

Published

on

A Floral Treat in the Upper Highway

If you’re in the Upper Highway area and looking for something fresh, creative, and soul-nourishing to do, don’t miss the Bouquet Building events at See Café in Hillcrest. We recently attended one and it was absolutely delightful — the kind of morning that leaves you smiling long after the last stem is snipped.

Held twice a month, this beautifully curated experience is a must for flower lovers — or anyone in need of a little peace, beauty and joy.

For under R300 per person, all the beautiful, fresh high-quality blooms are provided (seriously, the kind you’d never find at this price in a ready-made bouquet elsewhere). You just bring yourself and your creativity! It’s a hands-on, joy-filled session where you get to design and build your own bouquet from scratch, with guidance if you need it. It’s real value for money, with a big dose of creativity and fun!

Whether you choose to gift your masterpiece to someone special or keep it as a cheerful centrepiece at home (that lasts for weeks), it’s a heartwarming and fulfilling way to spend a morning.

Even better? For a (ridiculously reasonable) extra cost, you can enjoy a delicious coffee and breakfast from See Café while you create — and trust me, the vibe is just as wonderful as the food. (Click here to see their menu) The setting is intimate and cozy, the energy is uplifting, and there’s a lovely sense of community as you chat with fellow flower lovers. Plus, they’re dog-friendly for outside seating, so your furry friend can tag along and enjoy the fresh air while you build your bouquet!

This event is definitely a must-do in Durban. It’s ideal for a solo treat, a girls’ morning out, or even a unique gift experience. Whether you’re a seasoned flower arranger or just in it for the fun, it’s well worth it!

Follow See Café on social media here to keep an eye out for the next event – you won’t want to miss it. Your bouquet (and your soul) will thank you.

Book Review: Women Living Deliciously

Published

on

“Florence Given has done it again. With Women Living Deliciously, she serves up a bold and unapologetic call to arms for women everywhere to stop shrinking themselves and start savoring life in all its messy, sensual, and beautiful glory.

This isn’t your typical self-help book. It’s raw, punchy, and dripping with Florence’s trademark wit and sharp honesty. She challenges the toxic conditioning that tells women to play small, behave, or constantly “earn” their worth. Instead, she dares us to live deliciously – to prioritize pleasure, joy, and unapologetic self-expression.

What makes this book so exciting is how real it feels. Florence doesn’t sugarcoat the obstacles women face—patriarchal pressures, self-doubt, and the fear of being “too much.” But she flips those struggles into fuel. Each page feels like a rallying cry, reminding you that indulgence isn’t selfish – it’s survival.

Reading Women Living Deliciously feels like having a brutally honest (but fiercely loving) conversation with a friend who refuses to let you settle for less. It’s empowering, rebellious, and addictive in the best way.

Verdict: This book isn’t just a read – it’s an awakening. Florence Given’s words will make you laugh, nod furiously, and, most importantly, rethink the way you move through the world. If you’ve been craving a life that feels bigger, freer, and more delicious, this is your permission slip”

Book Review: The Knight and the Moth

Published

“This is the first book of the “The Stonewater Kingdom” duology and is absolutely perfect for gothic romantasy lovers like myself!

The Knight and The Moth follows the story of a Diviner (A woman who receives visions from six God-like creatures known as Omens) and her journey to the world beyond an ancient cathedral, the only home she has only ever known. Her fellow Diviners start to go missing after a knight arrives at the cathedral and she has no choice but to seek his help in finding them. But searching for the missing Diviners leads her to discover a much darker truth.

This is not the typical magical world you expect, the focus more on magical objects than magical powers which was unique and refreshing. The whole story intrigued me and kept me reading and reading so I could unravel the lies and find out the truth along with the main character, Sybil. I enjoyed her development from an obedient servant to a defiant and strong woman who now sees the world and herself differently.

Of course there was romance…instant hate and banter vibes between Sybil and the knight Rory, that grew into something more. It was quite a slow burn with one or two spicy scenes but as an avid smut reader I would have preferred a bit more spice haha.

I adored the quirky and annoying sidekick…a stone gargoyle who constantly mixes up phrases and has a knack for calling everyone Bartholomew. Hilarious! I loved this character and all his peculiar traits, he definitely brought light and humour to the story and had me laughing at some very awkward and embarrassing moments.

There was a shocking discovery towards the end, everything just clicked and it all finally made sense! The last few chapters were action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat, ending with such a twist!

If you love secrets and betrayal this is definitely for you. The second book is scheduled to come out sometime in 2026 and I can’t wait to read the epic conclusion!”
