KZN-based Cantrel releases his brand new single ‘Panic’ to radio this week.

Cantrel is Neil Breytenbach (from Prime Circle) and ‘Panic’ features local rapper Velosity and vocalist Lauren Laing. The single was mixed and mastered in Germany, and the Alternative Electronic Pop song is a powerful release from the local star and grabs the listener from the first few seconds, turning them into a fan by the end of the song.

Listen to ‘Panic’ on iTunes:

“’Panic’ was tracked at my Studio in KZN and I did all Beats, programming, instrumentation, composing, Producing and engineering. Whilst involving New Rap Sensation Velosity, I painted a vivid story board for him on the direction of the song. Velosity added his lyrical flavor & flo on the verses. The Verse of the Song relates directly more to the Panic & Anxiety of everyday life and the music Industry, and the Chorus has more of an uplifting happy feel good vibe to it. Hope you enjoy it!!!” explains Cantrel.

Cantrel has been writing songs on a single-by-single basis and live shows will commence from 2017 once the complete album has been recorded.

Introducing The Lockdown LIVE with Splashy Fen!

Taking place this coming Thursday the 9th, Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th of April, the Lockdown LIVE is a 3-day virtual Splashy Fen Music Festival, which fans can watch online and enjoy from the comfort of their homes.

Over the course of the 3 days fans can enjoy a carefully curated selection of amazing LIVE music, streamed from each musician’s home or private studio – artists like Goldfish, Veranda Panda, Goodluck, Donovan Copley from Hot Water, Gary Nixon from the Kickstands, Steve Umculo, Freddy-L … and more will be performing LIVE to all Splashy Fen fans this weekend.

But of course there is more than just LIVE music… find your zen with a 9 am yoga class on Friday or get the blood pumping with a fitness coach on Thursday and Saturday. Learn deliciously healthy plant-based recipes, entertain the kiddies with an Arts & Craft session on Friday at 10 am, or be entertained with LIVE comedy from East Coast Radios Darren Maule, Neil Green and Rory Petzer. Fans can also sit back and watch a series of festival and music tributes that take a look behind the scenes, and some proudly South African content that is sure to bring a happy tear to your eye.

Then comes the real heart-to-hearts as our festival director Stu Berry goes ON AIR with a number of guests; talking about Splashy Fen, why music matters and other entertaining topics. The ever-charismatic Jane Linley Thomas kicks off these ON AIR chats on Thursday at 11 am. Following that will be Splashy Fen’s very own Creative Director, Fuzzy van Rensburg who talks to us about building the Splashy Fen site; Jeremy Loops, Liam Magner from Veranda Panda, Australian performers from 2019 Juzzie Smith and The Pierce Brothers, as well as the 2020 Headlining act Coleman Hell.

The online festival is FREE to anyone and everyone, as a thank you to all the fans who have been exceptionally understanding and supportive of the festival’s date change. Fans can tune in via the following online link, or catch it live on the Splashy Fen website or social media pages:

Splashy Fen would not be Splashy Fen if it was not for the fans,” says Stu Berry, Festival Director. “The Lockdown LIVE is just a small way that we can show our gratitudeBesides, it brings us absolute joy to be able to do what we love even in these very trying times: that is, bring world-class music and entertainment to our fans.”

An up-side is that even those who could not make the original festival date, get to enjoy this virtual festival over the Easter weekend, from anywhere in the country. It’s a first for Africa, and we are extremely proud. What we do ask, is that if anyone is able to, we will be setting up a donation line on our social media pages for people who can make a contribution to all the performers who have little-to-no income over the lockdown period.”

But wait, there’s more… what would a Splashy Fen weekend be without tents! The #splashytentchallenge will also take place over the Easter long weekend, where fans are challenged to pitch their tent in their garden, lounge, bar, bedroom… wherever they can, to enjoy a hint of what would have been at Splashy Fen in Underberg. Fans can snap a picture or video and post it to Splashy Fen’s social media pages using the hashtag: #splashytentchallenge to stand a chance to win their share of R10 000 in prizes.

All the artists performing have agreed to do so for free to allow us to view the event online for free! You can’t get more amazing than that – if you are in a position to make a donation towards the artists during the next few days it would be greatly appreciated. You can do so via Zapper – check out the Splashy Fen social media pages for more info and latest news.

The Full Splashy Fen 2020 Line-up

With just over a month to go before South Africa’s friendliest festival Splashy Fen kicks off in the rolling foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, fans are booking their tickets at a pace of fury in anticipation for another sold-out festival this year.

With the recent announcement of the full 2020 festival line-up, there has been a buzz around the number of local talent that will be playing at Splashy Fen Music Festival this year.

We spend months curating a unique line-up that appeals to our fans,” says Stu Berry, Festival Director. “And while we’re thrilled to be bringing 5 stellar international acts to our stages this year, we’re also very proud to remain whole-heartedly invested in the superb local talent that South Africa has to offer. In fact, more than half of this year’s acts come from KZN.

In its early days, the festival genre focused heavily on folk and light folk-rock with the inclusion of traditional music styles such as mbaqanga and isicathamiya. Over the years, this offering has grown to include hip hop and pop music and in very recent years, electro jazz.

From local Underberg legends, to South African favourites, up-and-coming musos and international hotshots, there really is something for everyone to look forward to this year, with over 100 acts performing across 5 unique stage areas. Check out our review from past Splashy Fen here.

The Splashy Fen Main Stage kicks off on Friday the 10th of  April, and will have

the crowds on their feet all night and all weekend. Mali Zulu, Coleman Hell, Goodluck, Mi Casa, The Ndlovu Youth Choir, Frank Turner, Bad Peter, Shakey Graves, Rubber DUC and The Pierce Brothers are just some of the acts to catch; as well as the brand new Splashy Spectacle – a music, sound, lighting and experiential display to wow fans of all ages.

A firm favourite, the Corona River Stage is bigger and better than ever before and fans can make their way down to the refreshing waterside – via the new Corona bridge – from 10h45 on Friday the 10th of April. 4am, The Betsie Beers, Flying Bantu, Zebra, Faraway George among others, will entertain river frolicking festival goers until late on Sunday afternoon. Fans can also look forward to what is fast becoming a River Stage tradition, with a Surprise Set, where the stage is handed over to a particular artist/act from the festival’s line-up. Fans only know who is performing when they take to the stage.

In the heart of the Splashy Fen Food Court Area is the Acoustic Stage. Join Freddy-L, Steve Umculo, Down South, Bianca Sontoro, Mbijana Sibisi, Sol Natives, Coby Grant, and friends from 11h30 on Thursday the 9th to 21h00 on Sunday the 12th of April. Lounge around on hay bales with friends, old and new; enjoy a selection of over 30 food vendors and soak up the great sounds of every music genre out there. From acoustic harmonies to ukulele solos, and a dedicated Legends of the Fen set, run by Splashy Legends themselves, Don Clarke and Dicky Roberts.

When Impi Concept Events first approached us in 2016 to run a stage at Splashy Fen, the objective was to showcase and in turn, celebrate the ‘legendary’ musicians who had played at Splashy regularly over the years,” says Clarke.

“Of course, we jumped on board, and since then, have worked tirelessly to craft a line-up that attracts the more mature festival goers. After three successful years with the likes of Steve Fataar, Brian Finch and PJ Powers making an appearance; we are pleased to note that  the average attendance age of Splashy Fen is on the increase.”

This year, the Legends of The Fen showcase starts at 12h00 on Sunday the 12th with the exceptionally talented Rorke; Qadasi & Maqhinga at 13h15; The Songtellers & The Escape Goats at 14h30; Auldfield at 15h45 and Clout, who will entertain the crowds from 17h00.

The Splashy Fen Treehouse Stage is a magical space of creativity and whimsical wonder. A hand-made wattle stage lies hidden under the canopy of the Splashy Fen forest and has become a popular platform for budding musicians to showcase their skills.

Music performances start from 3:15 pm on Thursday the 9th through to Sunday the 12th of April, so come and enjoy music from Lindo M, Angel Mazibuko, The Kickstands, Gav Ferguson, Matt Gardiner, and more!  Throughout the 4-day festival, you’ll also be treated to a series of Belly dancing performances, Digeridoo and Flow workshops, and an exciting new chill-out zone with a  twist!

And for those who like to party the weekend away, the Electric Boma has it all: great music, quirky décor and party starters. Catch Sennora, Ryan Murgatroyd, Ty Stoltz, Melodica, Knott, Vimo and loads more from 19h00 on Friday the 10th to midnight on Sunday the 12th.

They’re selling like hotcakes… so be sure to grab yours today! South Africa’s longest-running music festival will take place over the traditional Easter weekend from Thursday the 9th of April to Monday the 13th of April 2020. Tickets are limited to 9 000 and available from

WIN: Sundowners at Chambers Club and the KZNPO Symphony Season Concert

As a stylish leap year treat, Urban Lime and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra are offering an elegant Thursday evening out for one lucky couple: after-work sundowner cocktails and snacks at Chambers Club and two tickets to the final KZNPO Symphony Season concert in Durban City Hall, on Thursday 5 March at 7.30pm.

To enter – answer the below TWO questions in the comment section of our Facebook post:

  1. Who’s giant 600sqm. portrait hangs alongside the Durban Club Chambers building (the former Netherlands Bank building) in Anton Lembede St?
  2. Where are the KZNPO Summer Season Symphony concerts being performed?

Chambers Club, South Africa’s newest members’ club, is housed in Durban Club Chambers building (the former Netherlands Bank head office). It is a members’ club for South Africa and Africa’s business and professional community located in the iconic Professional Quarter in the heart of the city, which is open to the public on evenings and weekends.

The beautiful building was designed by famed architect Norman Eaton in central Durban which has been transformed into a professional quarter for the legal fraternity, business community, entrepreneurs and creatives as part of an extensive city-wide project by the visionary team from Urban Lime.

One of the special features of the Chambers Club is a beautiful rooftop garden which overlooks the city – with commissioned sculptures, a water feature, quinine trees, indigenous grasses and aloes. This carefully created space is an eventual realisation of what Norman Eaton originally wished for – a tranquil roof top garden which is ideal for an after-work alfresco sundowner to meet colleagues and friends before heading home.

The Club offers facilities geared for legal practioners and businesspeople: meeting rooms, interview rooms, board rooms, restaurant, bar, lounge, parking facilities and cloakroom. It is perfect for professionals and those looking for an elegant, safe quiet place to meet, work and dine in the middle of town.

The KZN Philharmonic perform two Beethoven favourites, the Leonore Overture No 1 and the Triple Concerto, played by pianist, Malcolm Nay, violinist Tai Murray and KZNPO’s very own cellist Aristide du Plessis. The evening closes with a performance of Bizet’s delightful Symphony in C – all under the baton of Netherlands born conductor Arjan Tien who makes a popular return to round off the season on 5 March.
