The judges were journalist Kim Robertson from Durbanite; Vida Herbert, design expert and Anna Kelly, brand strategist and brand manager at Chateau Gateaux. The judges praised the effort that had gone into many of the stands. Kim said, “Rolkem and The Gin Co were both educative and innovative – they were very impressive stands. There was some delicious product and attention to detail.”
Anna Kelly said that it wasn’t always the stand owners who spent the most money who won awards: “Those behind some of the winning stands clearly put lots of love into what they do – they are passionate about their product, interacted with the public and really drew visitors in.”
Vida Herbert’s advice to stand holders: “The target market of GF&WS is obviously those interested in food and all things culinary so the knowledge of the person manning the stand is imperative. How the product is displayed must fit into the theme of the product being sold as well as the packaging of the product to continue the theme. Visual appeal is important in attracting people to a stand. If the stand is bare and unappealing, people will naturally be drawn away from it to the more interesting stand next door. I particularly loved some of the small exhibitors such as Timmy’s Moist Biltong and Delagoa Bay Piri Piri Co who went the extra mile.”
