uShaka Marine World’s Cargo Hold restaurant will be docking at the next port in December, continuing its culinary voyage around the world’s most exotic ports and destinations from the comfort of your dining table at one of Africa’s favourite restaurants.

Are you looking to get a taste of the true Malaysian heritage? Then, allow us to be your native guide as we share authentic Malaysian favourites with you.

Malaysia is like two countries in one, cleaved in half by the South China Sea. While peninsula flaunts bustling cities, colonial architecture, misty tea plantations and chill-out islands, Malaysian Borneo hosts wild jungles of orangutans, granite peaks and remote tribes, along with some pretty spectacular diving. Throughout these two regions is an impressive variety of microcosms ranging from the space-age high-rises of Kuala Lumpur to the traditional longhouse villages of Sarawak.

If there was one thing that unites all its pockets of ethnicities, religions and landscapes, it’s food. Between the Chinese-Malay ‘Nonya’ fare, Indian curries, Chinese buffets, Malay food stalls and Dayak specialties – we can promise you, you won’t be leaving hungry after dining off this month’s menu.

Menu

Kick starting the menu in December, sees a selection of starters, Satay (grilled for that authentic Malaysian flavour, served with a sweet and spicy peanut sauce); Ayam Bawang Putih (fried chicken wings tossed in garlic and chillies); Tom Tom Broth (prawns, calamari, chicken, mushrooms and carrots served in a lightly spiced chicken broth) or Penang Rojak (V), a vegetarian salad consisting of fresh beans, fried tofu, cucumber, pineapple, guava and dough crisps, coated in a sweet sticky sauce, chilli paste and topped with peanuts.

Mouthwatering mains include Hainanese Chicken (poached chicken served with chilli ginger sauce); Sambal Udang (stir-fried tiger prawns with fiery sambal sauce); Kari Ikan ( a tangy fish curry cooked with fresh tomatoes, okra and eggplant); Char Siu (barbecued pork slices with sweet soy glaze) or Kari Sayur (V), a vegetarian curry cooked with lentils, fresh tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and eggplant.

To end off, desserts include Apam Balik (crispy turnover pancake with crushed peanuts, butter and creamed corn served with ice-cream); Cendol (dark-green pulpy dish of sago, coconut milk and sugar syrup served with vanilla ice cream or Ais Kacang (red beans, corn, jelly, rose-syrup and sweetened milk on a mountain of shaved ice.

As part of the Malaysian month at Cargo Hold, the restaurant will also form part of the very first Taste Week from Monday, 5th December – Sunday, 11thDecember where 15 of the top restaurants in the waterfront area will be creating delicious meal items for all food lovers at special prices for this limited time period. Cargo Hold will be joining in by offering a complimentary Frose cocktail when ordering a main course off the Malaysian menu.

REVIEW: Kalamata Greek Restaurant

Greek Flavors and Festivities: A Night at Kalamata

If you’re searching for an authentic Greek experience in Durban North, Kalamata Greek Restaurant in Sunningdale is the place to be. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed and promptly guided to our seats. The atmosphere immediately transported us to Greece, with its beautifully themed decor, from the intricate ceiling details to the charming ornaments adorning the walls.

Our culinary journey began with a selection of tapas, and each dish was better than the last. The Halloumi was perfectly grilled, the crispy mushrooms were a delightful treat, and the Halloumi-style chips were simply the highlight of the evening—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavor.

Next, we indulged in their Gyro Pitas, a standout on the menu. We tried both the chicken and calamari options, and while both were fantastic, the calamari Gyro was absolutely to die for. Paired with a side of crispy chips, it was a meal to remember.

We also couldn’t resist ordering some Kalamata olives with pita bread, accompanied by a selection of Greek side sauces, including Mosaka and Tzatziki. Each bite was a perfect balance of traditional Greek flavors.

As the evening progressed, the atmosphere became even more lively. After some enjoyable chatting and wine, we were treated to a bit of Greek tradition—plate breaking! We enthusiastically joined in, breaking plates and partaking in Greek dancing around the restaurant. This interactive experience was definitely the highlight of the night, adding a fun and authentic touch to our visit.

To end the evening on a sweet note, we indulged in some traditional Greek desserts. The Pagato Sokolata, a rich Greek ice cream with chocolate sauce, was simply divine, and the Loukoumathes, honey-coated puffs, were a sweet, satisfying finale to our meal.

If you’re looking for a place that offers not only great food but also an immersive cultural experience, Kalamata Greek Restaurant is the perfect spot. Whether you’re dining with friends or family, you’re in for a fun night out filled with delicious food, Greek dancing, and an atmosphere that will make you feel like you’re in the heart of Greece. Highly recommended!

Unwind with Great Food and Vibes at Sunsets and Mermaids

Sunsets and Mermaids Restaurant and Bar in Umhlanga, Durban, is an experience you won’t want to miss. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a complimentary serving of olives stuffed with feta, a delightful mini starter that set the tone for what was to come.

We began with their unique sushi, featuring a delectable combination of prawn and salmon, paired with chicken dumplings that came with a choice of sauces. The hot sauce packed a punch, while the mild sauce offered a gentle, flavorful alternative—both enhanced the dishes perfectly. We paired our meal with expertly crafted cocktails: an Old Fashioned and a Margarita, each complementing the flavors of our food beautifully.

For lunch, we opted for their chicken and beef burgers, each topped with a homemade sauce that added a unique twist. The crispy onion rings and Lay-like chips were a perfect accompaniment, making for a satisfying and delicious meal.

What really stood out was the impeccable service. Not only were the staff attentive and friendly, but the chef personally came to our table to check if the food was to our liking and even offered some great recommendations. The atmosphere was electric, with the upbeat Durban music vibes adding to the overall experience.

Sunset and Mermaids is more than just a bar; it’s a culinary destination with a diverse menu that spans sushi, burgers, and even pizzas. Their Tuesday quiz nights and Wednesday Ladies Night add an extra layer of fun to the week. The place is such a vibe that even the Irish Rugby team made an appearance after their game against the Springboks!

We’re already planning our next visit and highly recommend that you give it a try too.
