With just a stone’s throw away from the Umgeni River, (depending on how strong your arm is) this hidden gem, with its unostentatious façade is called, The Riverside Day Spa.
Easy to miss, it absolutely shouldn’t be. As one steps through the entrance doors, one is immediately transported from the car park to a calming and ethereal space. With its tasteful Moorish design elements, light and textured walls. Spoiled for choice of teas and coffees, (as well as seating), or water if you simply wanted to hydrate, it’s no wonder that The Riverside Day Spa is simply in a class of its own.
With 6 double rooms, Riverside Day Spa is perfect for a girlfriends’ getaway, special bonding with mum or some romantic pampering with your partner. Each room is beautifully decorated providing a soothing haven for all senses, as tranquil music plays, lights dimmed, and the scent of oils enhance your relaxation.
Louise Davies is the owner and manager of Riverside Day Spa. With a background in public relations, and experience in the retail industry, Louise is well-versed in client relations, and aims to leave every spa customer feeling revived and renewed.
She has spent the last 20 years building her own practice, while studying alternative therapy, including reflexology, swedish massage, indian massage, and reiki healing. Louise, along with her husband, Nic and children, Cameron and Grace, have a vision to see the spa grow continuously, through hard work, dedication and passion.
Upon entering Riverside Day Spa, we were escorted into a beautifully decorated waiting area where we were offered refreshments before our treatments. We took this opportunity to sit down and have a girl’s catch-up while sipping on our tea/coffee.
Once done, our therapists led us into the treatment rooms which immediately felt relaxing. We each had a 30 minute back and neck massage which was heavenly! We left the room feeling like a new person and stress-free.
Following our massages, we each had a choice between a mani and a pedi. As we walked into the next room, we were surprised but delighted to find that our mani and pedi’s were going to be done while lying down! This made the experience far more pleasant as we didn’t have to sit at a table like most salons.
The staff are welcoming and warm, ensuring that your experience is a one-of-a-kind. They certainly do take pride in offering you exceptional service and going out of their way to enhance your visit!
We would highly recommend The Riverside Day Spa for your next girl’s day out, or even with your loved one!

Review: Zimbali Willow Stream Spa
Inside the exclusive Fairmont Zimbali Resort is the Willow Stream Spa.
We sent a Durbanite contributor to experience their treatments.
“I was treated to an incredible unforgettable experience at Willow Stream Spa.
Upon arrival, I was shown to the shower & changing room and stored my belongings in the lockers provided. I changed into a luxurious gown complete with slippers and waited in the relaxation room.
The relaxation room comes fully equipped with tea and coffee, fresh juices and bottles of water.
Shortly after, my therapist greeted me and proceeded to guide me into my treatment room. I was spoiled with a full body massage, which I must add was one of the best I have had.
The massage was followed by a facial, using their Africology skincare range, and lastly, a pedicure.
Afterwards, I sat in the relaxation room with a cup of tea and indulged in the delicious supply of muffins. With a view of the beautiful resort and garden, I had found my little slice of heaven.”

Support Local: Saint & Summer
SAINT&SUMMER was created much in the same way it’s now run – captivated by their local surroundings and based on a friendship foundation 20 years deep. It was in 2013 during the humid heat that is Durban in December, that they began piecing together the vision for their business.
We sat down with Julia and Roxy to find out more about the local brand.
1) How did Saint & Summer start?
We’ve been friends for years; long before we ever considered starting a designer footwear business together. Throughout the years, our shared love for fashion, swimwear, clothing and well, just a generally obsessive interest in all things stylish… made it a pretty easy move to start SAINT&SUMMER together.
We’re both beach obsessed, and one balmy Durban Summer, we got chatting about how to turn our passion into something adventurous. We wanted to share our love for style with our friends and other fashion-forward ladies out there. And so SAINT&SUMMER was born.
Sun kissed bodies, vibrant sunsets, punchy cocktail umbrellas and sandy hues became the mood board for our first SAINT&SUMMER’s range of matte jelly sandals – and now 5 years in – we’ve just launched an exciting swoon-worthy AW19 range that has everything from two-toned sneakers to studded block heels, sheen prints and leopard skin slip-ons.
2) What makes your brand proudly Urbanite?
We’re for everyone. All the looks, all the sass, all the versatility that the modern woman needs to rock her own unique sense of style. Our styles can be paired with any outfit. So whether it’s a pair of skinny tight jeans or a flowing boho-dress, the shoes fit!
Our SAINT&SUMMER shoes are easy to wear, easy to pair and have longevity with wearable fabrics, on-trend patterns and styles, and creative colour palettes that mix with every season.
3) What sets your brand apart from others?
We’re really passionate about fashion and we source shoes that we know we would be proud to wear any day of the week. It’s important to us that the shoes burst with personality and style because you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes J.
Our SAINT&SUMMER styles are super versatile too, and can take you right through from the morning to evening with their on-trend looks. Which is why comfort is also very key.
4) Would you consider a mens range in the future, or is it only for women?
We haven’t before but as our brand grows we are actually being asked this question a lot more frequently… so who knows, anything is possible
5) What is your vision with Saint & Summer?
To give fashionable women a unique way to express their individuality through style, in comfort, and within budget.
6) How can we purchase a pair? Online or in store?
We have an online store where fans can browse the ranges and purchase our shoes online at www.saintandsummer.co.za We also have a list of stockists on our site, detailing all the stores that stock and sell SAINT&SUMMER shoes so customers can have a look and see which stockists are in their area if they want to go and try on or browse the styles.
7) Do you have any advice for first time business starters?
Very simply… get dirty, work hard, be ready for mistakes It’s all a part of the journey.

Featured Local Brand: Sweet Peas
If you haven’t already heard of Sweet Peas, then where have you been?
Sweet Peas was established in 2017 by twin sisters Stacy and Che, who both have an equally strong love for ladies shoes and sandals.
We chatted to Stacy to find out more about this sweet brand!
1) How did Sweet Peas start?
Sweet Peas was born after a family holiday to Greece and with Grecian sandals being “the original birthplace of beautiful leather sandals” my sister and I realised that South Africa was missing this decided to make local leather sandals at a reasonable price that are comfortable and durable.
2) What makes you Proudly Durbanite?
We moved to Durban from Knysna in 2005 and we just loved how chilled and relaxed this city is and we feel we are the same. We are very down-to-earth, carefree and simple kinda’ gals so I feel that makes us proudly Durbanites.
3) How can we buy a pair of Sweet Peas?
You can purchase from our online store at www.sweetpeas.co.za
We also stock the following stores:
Bianca warren – The Square In Umhlanga
Unison – Fladers Boutique Mall Mount Edgecombe
Adele Catherine – Kloof
Beach and Beyond – Gateway, Ballito
4) An interesting fact about the brand?
Sweet Peas is the only sandal company where we can personally custom-make sandals for our clients’ different needs.
5) Who is the brains behind it all?
We are twin sisters and we both have an equal input into every aspect of our business. We think the same and have the same ideas so its very seldom that we disagree on anything which has been where our strength lies.
6) Any other information?
We are looking at expanding our brand into a small linen clothing range which will be available for Summer…. So watch this space!
