THE HEART OF DURBAN: I HEART MARKET

Published

on

  1. The first Saturday of every month… it is a day set aside by Durbanites to head outdoors to the welcoming lawns of the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium; to enjoy a morning with friends, family and fellow creatives at the wonderful I heart Market.

2018 marks a full decade of creativity for the I heart Market. A seriously impressive milestone for a market that has grown from a mere 12 stalls on a pavement in Windermere Road, to a booming monthly event with over 130 traders.

A shopper and foodie delight; the market provides a vibrant space, offering a curated collection of locally sourced, hand and homemade goods. Nosh on decadent brownies or death-by-triple-chocolate cupcakes. Savour home-cured meats, pastries, olives of every flavour, shape and spice, and artisanal flatbread heaving with toppings of your choice.

There is an incredible variety of food on sale at the I heart Market, which is homemade, typically wholesome and seriously delicious. Plus, it’s all available right here in one convenient and social spot. Come for breakfast, stay all the way through to lunch. Visitors really are spoilt for choice at the I heart Market. And we haven’t even begun to tell you about the jewellery, hand-made kiddies toys, fashion and décor items yet. You’ll have to join us on the 4th of August to discover the magic for yourselves and get lost in over 130 stalls of beautifully crafted and carefully selected products.General view during the I Heart Market. These local products are showcased on the grassy, open space underneath the towering arches of the Moses Mabhida Stadium. So, in addition to offering a wide selection of amazing products, the I heart Market also offers a refreshing shopping experience that is pleasantly different to the frenzied hustle and bustle of commercial malls and shopping centres. The I heart Market’s on-going success and popularity suggests that people would far rather take delight in discovering unique lifestyle products; from the exquisite to the quirky, the useful to the fashionable, than the impersonal mall experience. What’s more is that all of this magic happens while catching up with friends over a freshly brewed coffee, a scrumptious gelato or a just-squeezed fruit juice in the fresh air. The perfect way to spend a Saturday in Durban!

We encourage handcrafted, locally designed, organic, repurposed, up-cycled, locally sourced and delicious products” says Anna Savage, founder of the I heart Market. We work to ensure that we have the finest creatives in Durban trading at the market. This is what drives us and makes the I heart Market distinctive.”

Honouring their VivaLocal ethos, Anna ensures that only exceptional, well-made and unique products with a good design ethic are selected for the market. “We do not accept anything that has been mass-produced, nor do we accept any imported products. The I heart Market is a celebration of our local community of makers, and in this way, it works to empower entrepreneurs and boost the local economy.”I Heart Market. Photo: Al Nicoll

The market trades from 9am – 2pm on the first Saturday of every month as well as for three consecutive Saturdays in December.

REVIEW: Sunsets & Mermaids, Umhlanga

Unwind with Great Food and Vibes at Sunsets and Mermaids

Sunsets and Mermaids Restaurant and Bar in Umhlanga, Durban, is an experience you won’t want to miss. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and a complimentary serving of olives stuffed with feta, a delightful mini starter that set the tone for what was to come.

We began with their unique sushi, featuring a delectable combination of prawn and salmon, paired with chicken dumplings that came with a choice of sauces. The hot sauce packed a punch, while the mild sauce offered a gentle, flavorful alternative—both enhanced the dishes perfectly. We paired our meal with expertly crafted cocktails: an Old Fashioned and a Margarita, each complementing the flavors of our food beautifully.

For lunch, we opted for their chicken and beef burgers, each topped with a homemade sauce that added a unique twist. The crispy onion rings and Lay-like chips were a perfect accompaniment, making for a satisfying and delicious meal.

What really stood out was the impeccable service. Not only were the staff attentive and friendly, but the chef personally came to our table to check if the food was to our liking and even offered some great recommendations. The atmosphere was electric, with the upbeat Durban music vibes adding to the overall experience.

Sunset and Mermaids is more than just a bar; it’s a culinary destination with a diverse menu that spans sushi, burgers, and even pizzas. Their Tuesday quiz nights and Wednesday Ladies Night add an extra layer of fun to the week. The place is such a vibe that even the Irish Rugby team made an appearance after their game against the Springboks!

We’re already planning our next visit and highly recommend that you give it a try too.
