The Keyboard Killers Show

Published

on

Our contributor, Carmen attended the Keyboard Killers show held at the Elizabeth Sneddon recently.

“The Durbanite team were invited to see Keyboard Killers at the Elizabeth Sneddon last night, on the 9th November, and we were absolutely blown away! Ian von Memerty is an absolute genius, and absolutely made the piano come to life. Why, there was no ‘killing’ at all!

Thank you to Ian Von Memerty, Andrew Warneke, and Bronwen Clacherty for a riveting, spectacular show. We were entertained from start to finish, which is no wonder why the show is nearly booked out.
But fear not, for it’s said to return at the end of February. And guess who’s going to go see it for a second time!”

More about the show:

Take South Africa`s ‘King of the Keyboard’, von Memerty and put him together with eight of the greatest song writing piano stars and you have the recipe for a smash-hit, `killer` show! Why, of the millions of people who play the piano, are there those rare individuals whose music and lyrics inspire for decades? von Memerty takes eight of the greats – Stevie Wonder, Noel Coward, John Legend, Irving Berlin, Freddy Mercury, Fats Waller, Cole Porter and Billy Joel – an outstanding octave of pianistic power, and together with the driving percussion of Bronwen Clacherty and a the cool cat double bass of Andrew Warneke, shares his love for these iconic creators.

It is an electrifying collection of talent and their musical legacy is unparalleled. Featuring the drama of Bohemian Rhapsody; the swinging cool of I Get A Kick out Of You; the wicked wit of Don`t Put Your Daughter On the Stage Mrs Worthington; the romance of Ordinary People; the showbiz razzle-dazzle of Puttin` On the Ritz; the groove and joy of Isn`t She Lovely; and the toe – tapping stride of Ain’t Misbehaving. Enjoy the virtuosity, the style, the sheer joy of great music and timeless words brought to new life by `the James Bond of South African musical theatre`.

With magnificent Lighting by David Limbert, Sets by Mark Farrow and Costumes by Morne van Der Schyff. Von Memerty is accompanied by two superb musicians, Bass – Andrew Warneke (Masters in Music), Percussion – Bronwen Clacherty (Doctorate in Music).

Durban is the final stop on a national tour which has played to capacity audiences and wonderful reaction.

BUMP & GRIND at Talloula

Published

on

Durban comedy favourites Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert-McIlroy return to Talloula with their new musical comedy –  BUMP & GRIND, a high-energy musical sketch comedy that delivers a riotous mix of song, dance, quick-fire character comedy and heart. Created under the direction and choreography of Daisy Spencer, the show has already delighted audiences this festive season with its trademark MacBob mayhem and polish.

Described by Billy Suter as “a sparkly cracker of song, dance and off-the-wall humour,” BUMP & GRIND is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud theatrical experience. The show tumbles through a helter-skelter parade of characters — from fan favourites Bruce and Charmaine, as Elvis impersonators, pensioners Beatrice and Max, and super-sage Dr Veejay, to bold new creations including AI androids, Latin dance sensations and an Irish preacher with stand-up ambitions.

The music includes numbers from Talking Heads, Lady Gaga, Elvis, The Beatles, Whitney Houston and a climactic medley of ’80s chart hits.

Set right on the shoreline in Durban North, the event combines top-tier local DJs, a large-scale production setup and the unbeatable energy of a New Year’s Eve beach crowd.

Expect SA’s leading DJs and artists soundtracking the sunset and carrying the party straight through to midnight and beyond. The venue setup includes over 2000m² of tenting, multiple bars spread across the site, a dedicated food court and plenty of seating for when your legs need a break but the music refuses to.

For those looking to level things up, the VVIP Ocean View Deck offers a premium NYE experience with uninterrupted views, all-inclusive drinks, exclusive seating and a private bar — the kind of setup that makes waiting for midnight feel effortless.

Tickets are limited and have sold out every year, so booking early is strongly advised. If you’re planning to welcome the new year with your feet in the sand, good music in the air and Durban doing what Durban does best, this is where you want to be.

See you on the beach.
