Music and drama – as the Pavilion celebrates Christmas

Published

on

The festive season is traditionally celebrated with music and colourful concerts and the Pavilion is going all out this year with plenty of local talent.

Christmas is a very special time for children, and we will be entertaining our younger shoppers with festive daily interactive productions and a truly home grown theme, “Christmas by the Sea”.

These shows were specially created for the Pavilion by award winning and multi-talented Durban writer, director and actor, Marc Kay, who has been lighting up Durban stages since 2004 and has appeared in traditional pantomimes, children’s theatre and musicals such as Annie.

Christmas by the Sea is directed by Victoria Graaf-Raw, who is studying drama at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and also features students from the University.  Together, they impart a very special message to our under 12’s – Christmas is different (and special) for everyone.

As one of the quirky, fun characters discovers, Christmas is about who you are and where you grew up. In England, Christmas may be about snow and reindeers. In Durban, Christmas is often about surfing, sunshine and big family braais!

The children’s Christmas shows will take place on 15th, 17th, 21st, and 23rd December at 11:30am and on 20thDecember at 2pm. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to either watch or try out for a part in the production. Entry is free.

Tweens, teens and the young-at-heart can look forward to two concerts featuring home grown talents Shekhinah and Kyle Deutsch. They will perform their chart-topping single “Back to the Beach” at the Fountain Court at 1pm on 12th December and again on 19th December. Fans will be treated to both these artists’ new singles which have just been released.

The UKZN Jazz band “Seasons” will also be performing at these concerts as well. Made up of Juran Sibanda – Clarke on drums, Jaedon Daniels on keyboards and piano, Micale Leon on bass guitar and Ethan Naidoo on lead guitar with guest vocalist, Deseré Pedro, this musical outfit is quite at home with everything from pop and rock to R&B and reggae thanks to multiple performances at the Jazzy Club, Jazzy Rainbow, the Durban City Hall Art Gallery and number of functions and events in and around Durban.

Songs will include Santa Claus is Coming to Town, All I want for Christmas is You, Have Yourself a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells, UB 40’s Red Red Wine, Bob Marley’s Is this Love, Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry Be Happy, Stevie Wonder’s Jamming and more.

Visitors to the Pavilion can also expect a truly inspirational performance from the Durban Symphonic Choir on 16thDecember at 4pm when they perform a medley of both traditional and modern Christmas favourites. Formed as long ago as 1966, the choir includes a wide range of people who share a love of music. It has become well known not only for its performances of major classical choral works but also lighter contemporary numbers that are enjoyed across the board.

BUMP & GRIND at Talloula

Published

on

Durban comedy favourites Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert-McIlroy return to Talloula with their new musical comedy –  BUMP & GRIND, a high-energy musical sketch comedy that delivers a riotous mix of song, dance, quick-fire character comedy and heart. Created under the direction and choreography of Daisy Spencer, the show has already delighted audiences this festive season with its trademark MacBob mayhem and polish.

Described by Billy Suter as “a sparkly cracker of song, dance and off-the-wall humour,” BUMP & GRIND is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud theatrical experience. The show tumbles through a helter-skelter parade of characters — from fan favourites Bruce and Charmaine, as Elvis impersonators, pensioners Beatrice and Max, and super-sage Dr Veejay, to bold new creations including AI androids, Latin dance sensations and an Irish preacher with stand-up ambitions.

The music includes numbers from Talking Heads, Lady Gaga, Elvis, The Beatles, Whitney Houston and a climactic medley of ’80s chart hits.

“It’s a vibe… Aaron and Lisa’s talent and skill lie in their seemingly effortless transformations from one character to another — and making every dance hit and ballad that character’s own!” Shannon Kenny (ArtSmart)

With broad family appeal, high energy and a proven track record of sold-out runs, don’t miss BUMP & GRIND at Talloula at the end of January!

Review: Bouquet Building at See Café

Published

on

A Floral Treat in the Upper Highway

If you’re in the Upper Highway area and looking for something fresh, creative, and soul-nourishing to do, don’t miss the Bouquet Building events at See Café in Hillcrest. We recently attended one and it was absolutely delightful — the kind of morning that leaves you smiling long after the last stem is snipped.

Held twice a month, this beautifully curated experience is a must for flower lovers — or anyone in need of a little peace, beauty and joy.

For under R300 per person, all the beautiful, fresh high-quality blooms are provided (seriously, the kind you’d never find at this price in a ready-made bouquet elsewhere). You just bring yourself and your creativity! It’s a hands-on, joy-filled session where you get to design and build your own bouquet from scratch, with guidance if you need it. It’s real value for money, with a big dose of creativity and fun!

Whether you choose to gift your masterpiece to someone special or keep it as a cheerful centrepiece at home (that lasts for weeks), it’s a heartwarming and fulfilling way to spend a morning.

Even better? For a (ridiculously reasonable) extra cost, you can enjoy a delicious coffee and breakfast from See Café while you create — and trust me, the vibe is just as wonderful as the food. (Click here to see their menu) The setting is intimate and cozy, the energy is uplifting, and there’s a lovely sense of community as you chat with fellow flower lovers. Plus, they’re dog-friendly for outside seating, so your furry friend can tag along and enjoy the fresh air while you build your bouquet!

This event is definitely a must-do in Durban. It’s ideal for a solo treat, a girls’ morning out, or even a unique gift experience. Whether you’re a seasoned flower arranger or just in it for the fun, it’s well worth it!

Follow See Café on social media here to keep an eye out for the next event – you won’t want to miss it. Your bouquet (and your soul) will thank you.

Click here to watch our reel of the event and see what you can look forward to when you attend!
