The festive season is traditionally celebrated with music and colourful concerts and the Pavilion is going all out this year with plenty of local talent.
Christmas is a very special time for children, and we will be entertaining our younger shoppers with festive daily interactive productions and a truly home grown theme, βChristmas by the Seaβ.
These shows were specially created for the Pavilion by award winning and multi-talented Durban writer, director and actor, Marc Kay, who has been lighting up Durban stages since 2004 and has appeared in traditional pantomimes, childrenβs theatre and musicals such as Annie.
Christmas by the Sea is directed by Victoria Graaf-Raw, who is studying drama at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and also features students from the University.Β Together, they impart a very special message to our under 12βs β Christmas is different (and special) for everyone.
As one of the quirky, fun characters discovers, Christmas is about who you are and where you grew up. In England, Christmas may be about snow and reindeers. In Durban, Christmas is often about surfing, sunshine and big family braais!
The childrenβs Christmas shows will take place on 15th, 17th, 21st, and 23rd December at 11:30am and on 20thDecember at 2pm. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to either watch or try out for a part in the production. Entry is free.
Tweens, teens and the young-at-heart can look forward to two concerts featuring home grown talents Shekhinah and Kyle Deutsch. They will perform their chart-topping single “Back to the Beach” at the Fountain Court at 1pm on 12thΒ December and again on 19th December. Fans will be treated to both these artistsβ new singles which have just been released.
The UKZN Jazz band βSeasonsβ will also be performing at these concerts as well. Made up of Juran Sibanda β Clarke on drums, Jaedon Daniels on keyboards and piano, Micale Leon on bass guitar and Ethan Naidoo on lead guitar with guest vocalist, DeserΓ© Pedro, this musical outfit is quite at home with everything from pop and rock to R&B and reggae thanks to multiple performances at the Jazzy Club, Jazzy Rainbow, the Durban City Hall Art Gallery and number of functions and events in and around Durban.
Songs will include Santa Claus is Coming to Town, All I want for Christmas is You, Have Yourself a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bells, UB 40βs Red Red Wine, Bob Marleyβs Is this Love, Bobby McFerrinβs Donβt Worry Be Happy, Stevie Wonderβs Jamming and more.
Visitors to the Pavilion can also expect a truly inspirational performance from the Durban Symphonic Choir on 16thDecember at 4pm when they perform a medley of both traditional and modern Christmas favourites. Formed as long ago as 1966, the choir includes a wide range of people who share a love of music. It has become well known not only for its performances of major classical choral works but also lighter contemporary numbers that are enjoyed across the board.
